Evap. leaks - anyone try that leak-stop stuff? 850 1995

Warm weather brings out all the owners with the evap. problems on their 850s - myself included. I've already had it replaced once under warranty and am in no mood to replace it out of my own pocket. Re-charging it, as needed, will suffice but has anyone tried using that A/C leak-stop stuff on the 850's A/C system? Anyone have any experiences using this stuff on their other cars?

I just recharged my wife's Dodge Caravan with one can of 134 and one can of 134 with sealer (also purchased at Wally World as another lister had).

The system had leaked empty over the winter. I'll keep you posted here on the results with the Dodge guinea pig.

Could be really exciting when that stop leak stuff gets to the compressor...

From what I've been reading in posts here, I'd say that the stuff isn't working. I once looked into it for my older RWD R12 Volvo and found a place that sells a sealer kit that's so expensive that for me, I'm better off just systematically replacing whatever AC part fails AND yes, on older Volvos too, something's always leaking freon from somewhere. I don't think there's been one year that I didn't have to at least add some freon that leaked out over the winter and I've replaced every part so far BUT the evap (the one thing that rarely ever leaked on older pre-850 Volvos).

If you are referring to the leak stop radiator stuff--which I think is the same stuff, yes I have. My wife's car had a leak at the head gasket of which the mechanic told us the gasket would blow by the end of summer--2 months later. I put the stop leak into the radiator on the chance that it might help--cheaper than the cost of a new head gasket. Low and behold, it worked like a charm. It has been 3 years now on that same engine and no problems. No leaks. The stuff works and its cheap.

I hope this helps. Good luck. Might it be possible that one of the hoses has a small pin hole leak?

Evap. leaks - anyone try that leak-stop stuff? 850 1994

I tried some stuff from a Kragren auto about 6 months ago and I had to recharge the system myself last week so I guess it didn't work. This time I went to Walmart and tried the AC sealer that they sold. I keep the board posted.

My total cost for the sealant and R134 with hose adapter-pressure gauge was about $50. If I just refill in the future it'll be less than $20 per charge if I don't try another sealer. At that rate I can re-charge 50 more times and I won't have to pay for another $1,000 evaporator that'll probably fail in a few years.

Thanks for replying...guess you have a bigger than normal leak. I probably do too seeing that I only re-charged the A/C system about this time last year and I'm really low on refridgerant again. I'll give that A/C sealer a try too but if by this time next year I go low on it again then it's probably pointless to try and seal up the leaks. Thanks, keep us posted - I'll try to do the same.
