AC PANEL LIGHTS FLASHING, what does it mean 850

Hello,

When i start my car up the two amber lights on the AC panel both flash, the manual says that means there is a problem with the system. The volvo shop told me it can mean low freon or problem with the controller.

Anyone have a more specific idea of what this can mean, are there codes associated with this?

I was going to add freon to see if the lights go out but the AC is nice and cold and i do not to overcharge it and cause more porblems.

As i live in Houston and it has been 80 degree's all week thta means summer is close and i want to do any repairs before it gets to be 105.

Thanks for the Help

Dan

Yes,
The codes can be accessed by an OBDII scanner or a volvo shop. I read mine for my 1994 850 myself last week. It can be many things. For example my AC system generated the codes that indicate i had a inside temperature sensor fault. Basically my car would blow either cold air or hot air without any inbetween. Fans worked fine, but i could not regulate the temperature. If you get the codes likley i can tell you what it is since i have bought the Volvo pocket book (codes are also included in the Haynes manual).

Dan -

My '97 Turbo does the same thing intermittently when the humidity is high. I live in SC, so that pretty much covers the summer. Have discussed it a few times with my mechanic. His best advice (and it's worked for three years now) is to check the freon twice a summer. No leaks so far. As long as the freon checks out, I simply ignore it. I've even cleared the fault by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. No flashes for a few days until the humidity spikes.

If it continues even in low humidity period, it may warrant further checking.

He pulled some codes for me two summers ago. I can't remember what he got, but upon review, they were general an non-conclusive.

My (and my mechanic's) only assumption is that the Swedes just weren't anticipating a Southern summer. :)

Please post if you discover anything specific.

My car is also a 97 Turbo GLT (low pressure turbo wish i had the T5) thanks for the reply.

I am about to buy a OBDII reader and want to know if the codes for the AC are accessed there also. Wife left gas cap loose and Check engine light is on anyway.

I have not tried to disconnect the battery to clear the codes, i may give this a try. is there any thing special about disconnecting the battery that i should know i.e. anti theft system, radio code?

will this affect anything to disconnect battery, I bought this car last November and have needed the AC untill now. And i have never removed the battery from this car.

I think it can be many things. This happened to me: I would turn on
the fan and it would make a groaning sound, stop and the lights would
flash. That was pretty obvious that it was the blower fan (I replaced
it and problem fixed).

I don't know how you pull the codes (or clear them).

Blower motor failures are fairly common.

Thanks for the reply

The blower motor sounds fine and Blows hard.

I need to find out if the codes are in the OBDII, i hope someone knows.

It indicates a general fault in the system. Could be a number of things. You need to have the codes pulled by your Volvo shop. I would not do anything until you ascertain the exact problem.

Are theese codes in the ECU and accessed by the OBDII?

I am going to get a code reader for the OBDII and wanted to know if this is where to find the codes?

Blow the dust out of the climate control sensor next
to your rear defrost switch.

Give it a try! It worked for me.
