Lifter Noise Question 850

I recently purchased a 1994 855. It has very loud lifter noise for the first 10 minutes then quiets down. I went to the dealer for suggestions and was told it was common for the oil pick up tube o-ring to let air in and produce the ticking i'm experiencing. Has anyone else had experiences with this? How difficult would it be to repair on my own. I'm afraid that I'll have to do something soon as it is beginning to do it on and off when warm now. I just can't afford the 6 hours to install a new o-ring. Thanks for any advice.

    Lifter Noise Question 850

It's really more than one o-ring, there's 3 for your car when the pan is removed and yes, I've done it. There's one for the sump and two that go between the pump and oil filter housing. The pan itself isn't hard but getting there is yet another story for a guy in his own garage with minimal tools (assuming here?). The engine must be supported, the engine mounts unbolted from the subframe, the steering rack unbolted from the subframe with sway bar link ends, then the subframe must be lowered so that the pan clears the sump. There is no gasket, it's a chemical gasket which I like to have it sit overnight before adding oil even though they say it's not required.

      Lifter Noise Question 850

How do you support the engine when removing the oil pan? By the transaxle or are there a couple of points to hand it by?

      Lifter Noise Question 850

Thanks for the advice. I bought the required kit from the dealer for about $30 (4 o-rings and a tube of sealer). I plan on tackling it myself to save major $$$. One thing I wonder though, Haynes says I need to remove the oil pump?? The dealer said nothing of this and I have no gaskets for it. Is it necessary to remove as stated in the repair manual? Or is that only required when removing the intermediate section as well? Thanks again for helping me... I'm new to volvo's and still learning... but at least this car is easier to work on than any of my 3 back assward Saabs.
