Front passenger door won't open from the outside V70-XC70 1998

We just bought our first Volvo over the weekend (300 miles away) and found out last night that the front passenger door will not open from the outside. It will open from the inside and all other doors properly open from both the inside and outside. The car has 51K miles on it so it is no longer (by 1000 miles) under warranty for this type of problem. I have just left a message with the salesman who sold us the car but thought I'd post a message here to see what you folks thought.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Chuck

I had a similar problem with my S70 sometime ago. The mechanic removed the door panel and found the pin that connects the locking mechanism off. He put the pin back where it belongs. It took about 30 minutes to get the job done and I have not had any problem since.

I had a problem with my front passenger inside door latch that the pastic cable retainer piece broke on my '98 V70. Had to replace the cable mechanism (http://volvospeed.com/Volvospeed.htm has great instructions) which isn't as difficult as one would think. The OEM part (cable assy) was only $10 from a dealer. Anyway, I replaced this last night and all is well. Regarding your problem on the outside latch, there's a connector mechanism that attaches the outside handle to the latch that either came off or broke. You'll have the pull the door panel and latch out to verify (again, not that tough).
Good luck.
