UK members--what does this mean?

Hi.

I heard that Connolly's Hide Food is a good for preserving leather. I've been using Imperial Leather over the last year and it does not seem to prevent the stress cracks from forming in the leather.

My question is. The product label states that it contains white spirit and is non-hazardous. What is "white spirit?" To me it smells like naptha or something similar.

Thanks,

Bryan

White spirit is a turpentine substitute and us used as a paint thinner. Connolly Hide Food is a leather preservation product used and recommended by Rolls Royce (of all people) for the absolute #1 supplier of hides for high class autos - Connolly. It seems to work much better on the vat dyed leather than it does on the surface dyed. It is still an excellent product but takes a little bit of working into the leather.

      librayacht,

Thanks for the info. It's strange that it would be labeled "non-hazardous." Although , I've seen German products containing VOC that are labeled the same way. I guess it 's the difference between US and UK/European regulatory agencies.

Is the Volvo leather vat dyed or painted on? The local Mercedes dealer has a special sale on Hide Food, so I might pick up a jar.

I am sure that the Volvo leather is surface dyed, looking at my upholstery I can see some of underlying leather showing through at the seams.
Mercedes used to be vat dyed but on the later cars they have gone to surface dyeing.

          John,

Thanks again for your help. I did pick up a jar of Hide Food.

You're right that it takes a "bit" of effort to work into the leather. However, after about three applications, all the dirt was removed. I applied a final coat and let it soak in for 24 hours. The leather is soft and the stress cracks are almost gone.
