replacing brake rotors--do I need to use new bolts? 850 1994

The Haynes manual advises using new bolts when remounting the calipers, but the dealers around here don't stock them. Are they necessary?

post-op on my rotor replacement 850 1994

As cleeland correctly stated, I had the bolts in the box with my OEM rotors! I felt a little dumb--maybe being a tad over-zealous in the preparation phase trying to get everything together. Thanks to everyone here, I did front/rears in about three hours total with the most time being to use a wire brush to shine up the calipers a bit. No more squealing brakes!

As another advises, loctite blue (242) on old bolts is okay. Be sure to torque to specified values.

If you purchase OE rotors, they come with new bolts pretreated with loctite blue 242.

Don't skimp on the loctite. A shop once did on one of my cars, and the bolt backed itself out and fell out while I was driving. Fortunately, it was the lower bolt, so the caliper dragged on the rotor in the direction of rotation rather than against. If it'd been the other way, I shudder to think what may have happened.

(As a side note, keep a variety of sizes and quantities of zip ties in your glove box. I used a zip tie to keep the caliper off the rotor in order to get to a parts place and get the proper size bolt for real replacement.)

You can reuse them but you need to use lock-tite.

Hi,

I am slowly over the years teaching myself with the help of this and another board how to fix things. I just recently had my calipers off and didn't replace the bolts then. The only concern most people have is the correct torque when you retighten them.

I can't remember now if you buy stock rotors/discs if a new set of bolts are included.

slow learning mark in the uk.

Hey

I recently did the brakes on my 95 850 turbo. I upgraded the rotors to brembo cross drilled and slotted and put all new OEM pads in. I didn't replace any of the bolts. Just used the same old stuff, works good for me.

If you haven't already figured it out, when you take the rotors off, if you do, take off that little gold pin sticking out otherwise, it will never go. It's a 10mm bolt. Also the rotors in the back are a huge pain cause of the parking brake. careful not to brake the parking brake pads in the process. Just keep rocking them back and forth, you will get them off

Good luck

Sadude
