    Bad News on the 2001 V70 V70-XC70 2001

    Hi Dave,

I got in the mail yesterday Customers Report 2002 Auto Issue. In the section where CR talks about the Best and Worst cars they added the 2001 V70/Cross Country to the list of "Used cars to Avoid".

    Something to consider.

      Bad News on the 2001 V70 V70-XC70 2001

      Steven,

I have seen (breifly) that report. Does CR give the same recomendation for the S80 ? Now that they are using the same platform for the V70, it is bascically the same vehicle with a wagon body?? Like the Ford Taurus sedan/wagon. I also noticed in the report that there weren't "alot" of problems with the 2001 V70 as compared to, say the 98 V70, but still got the bad recomendation. A little bit confusing to me?

      Dave

        Bad News on the 2001 V70 V70-XC70 2001

        Hi Dave,

I believe what CR is referring to the fact that in order to keep the car a long time with out damaging the AWD system you have to be anal on the tire rotation/wear. Failure to do so will and can cause costly repairs to AWD drive-line components. I have heard some owners complain about the transmission in the 2001 V70 but have not heard of any complaints in the Cross Country.

As for the 2001 V70 and the S80 sharing the same platform; The only thing that is common is the chassis. The S80 and V70/Cross Country have different engines, transmission and drive trains.

    Hi Again Dave,

You may want to try the Volvo Spy Forum for a better understanding on the 2001 V70. Volvo Spy has a forum dedicated to the New V70.

Thank you all for your input. It seems no matter which year, someone has had a bad experience (not Volvo alone) It can be a crapshoot. Thats why I am questioning the Dealership, espesially after the purchase. It can make all the difference. Thanks to Rick for the insight into Lehman, so far, with test drives, they have been great, they even remember which cars I drove and my name! That has to tell me something about them.

      Dave

    Hi Dave,

The point I was making is that I have personally encountered several Volvo owners who are having issues with the GearTronic Automatic Transmission in 2001 V70. This was the first year for Volvo "GearTronic Automatic Transmission. If you are looking at a Used 2001 V70, Buyer Beware. You could be buying someone's Lemon.

“Do your homework”. Read as many review as you can find and visit the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration web sight and review all the Service Bulletins/Recalls on the car you are looking to purchase. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

Oh, If you do decide to purchase a Volvo make sure you get an extended warranty on the drive train. I highly recommend that you purchase an extended warranty if your plans are to keep the car past the Factory Warranty.

    Good Luck & Best Wishes,

    Steven---

    Dave,

as a fellow Retailer, I can definitely say great things about them (cannot say the same about CERTAIN Volvo Retailers out there). They are very good people, they are known to be straight shooters and their CSI is extremely high. For whatever it is worth, I would bet that you would be happy buying a car from them.

As far as the post below, regarding the "bugs of 2001 V70s", I will disagree with the comment as I have not seen any serious problems/bugs with either model year...My car, aside from replacing one of the remotes under warranty, has been 100% problem-free since day 1. But I will agree with the comment that a 2002 model may be a bit quicker than a 2001. In an automatic, you will barely notice the difference. If you are considering a manual transmission car then, yes, the 2002 will have better throttle response (it will not be faster overall). The biggest difference has been found in the 2002 S60/V70 2.4Ts/XCs/AWDs, S60/V70 T5Ms and S80 2.9s. The rest of the cars, feel pretty much the same between 2001 and 2002.

just curious about my local one (inland empire volvo in San Bernardino, CA)

they have been pretty good (if pricey) to me and have a couple nice reviews on Mr. Linden's site.

Have we been lucky, or do they have a good reputation too?

and FWIW to other BB people out there, if you like your dealer and get a survey, anything other than a maxxed out postive survey is considered failing in the business (Or so I hear - is it true?)

    Hi Dave,

I've purchased 6 Volvos (owned 8) from Lehman in the past 15 years and have been very pleased. If you need specific details, contact me at rountree@cvn.net. Rick

    Hi Dave,

I can not say anything about Lehman Volvo but I would recommend that you take a closer look at the 2002 V70. The 2002 has better performance and less bugs. You would be happier with a 2002 than a 2001 V70. 2001 was the first year for the current V70.

    Good Luck,

    Steven---
