Experience w/ Volvo After Sales V70-XC70

Our 2001 V70 has been back at the dealer countless times for tweaking and repairs. Some minor, some major. Sun roof rattles, tranny hard shifts, engine grinding noises, brake noises, can't lock the car (with or without remote) can't UNlock the door (with or without remote), you get the idea. Fortunately it's all been under warranty but the countless trips to the dealer, inconveniences, and frustations! The dealer has really done their best in trying to fix the problems but I know too many of the service people on a first name basis. I thought that when you buy a car you drive away happy in a car that works.

I'm nervous about when the warranty runs out. I've spoke to other new 2001 owners and the've been really happy with their car. We've made a good faith effort, and so has our local dealer in trying to work out all the gremlins. What's the next step? Does anyone have experience with the California Lemon law process and/or dealing with the Volvo NorthAmerica Reps in after sales with a beautiful car, that unfortunately, is possessed?

Thanks in advance,
Stuart

I've been through having to deal with a new lemon. I had a VW, junk. I went through the lemon law BS, VW corporate policy, and VW told me they'll see me in court even though they know they would loose. (I would have won, I won't bother with the details). However, if volvo was what it was when I bought my '98, they should replace your car without court, since they seem to have ethics, versus VW. Definaely keep a record of ALL records of repairs, and start talking to a VOlvo N.A> representative, get a dialog going with Volvo.

California, unfortunately, does not have a lemon law with many teeth. So you might want to investigate or start the process now. Your car is an anomaly, and you need to determine the lemon law will back you up...or if the cost of continued ownership includes an extended warranty. Based on other posters here, when the dealership tires of battling you over the lemon law procedure, they'll (a) provide you a replacement car, and (b) in return ask you to sign a document that the car was not a lemon (they don't want their cars in the statistics).

We had a similar situation with a '00 S80. This vehicle was highly problematic from the beginning, and had some serious safety issues. Even though our dealer/service dept. and regional tech did their best, the problems persisted. VCNA was useless, and thus we DID invoke the California Lemon law...SUCCESSFULLY. The same day we returned the car, we leased a new '01 XC.
So far, no problems. E-mail me if you want attorney's name, particulars, etc.

    Good luck!!

Guess you need to ask yourself if you want to keep the car or not? Unfortunately some of todays new cars (not only Volvo either BTW) are seemingly plagued with several new car problems BUT that's why you have a warranty and ideally those minor problems should all be cured in time, if they aren't already. I understand your perception of how this car's been acting but hopefully it's now fixed and should stay that way, within reason (all things fail sooner or later).
You can always either buy an extended warranty or even sell the car if nothing else.
