TME/IPD ECU reprogram versus chipping 850 1997

I recently read a discussion that dealt with the advantages/disadvantages of ECU reprogramming and chip tuning. Bottomline...if I have TME/IPD reprogram my ECU, can the dealership "flash" the original program back into it during a service visit to "fix" something else and override the upgrade? If so, I would then be out the cost of the reprogramming. Any thoughts? The other thread felt chip tuning was better due to this reason.

I just talked to Tech Support at PES and they claim there ECU gives a 40 HP gain without changing the exhasut to a sport system. This is not a chip, you send them your ECU and they reprogram it and return it to you next day air. Also for an additional 50 dollars they will send you another Circuit Board with a stock programmed Chip.

This could be good in case of any warrenty issue you can put the stock chip back in!

PES Offers the choice of a Stock Programmed Chip for an additional $50.00. If you have them do tour ECU upgrade they offer this option.

Put the stock chip in and then go to the dealer for repairs, once repairs are done put the Reprogrammed Chip back in.

I have some info on this Email me

Dan

Your upgraded ECU can only be reprogrammed by a Retailer if they have to FLASH it, for example, if there is a major software recall, etc. Even then, IPD has a guarantee that they will reprogram your ECU at no charge.

Your '97 ECU can't be reprogrammed by the dealers VST (scan tool) like the newer cars can. Your "performance" ECU has a different "chip" installed rather than programming so unless someone REPLACES your ECU, it won't be a problem.

The '99 on up cars are a different matter altogether, done through programming only, no "chip".

You don't have a choice on "chip tuning" vs "programming", it's not optional.

Bart,

there are companies out there that will solder a chip on the ECUs of 1999 or newer models (Motronic ME7 version). Actually, the majority of companies do this through soldering a chip. Very few companies have done the extensive (and expensive!) research necessary to crack down the complex ME7 codes in order to produce and upgrade through flashing.

i would tell the dealer not to touch the ecu and if they do re-program it then they ought to give you your $$$ back
