Identified source of rattle: how to lubricate it? 850 1996

I have identified the source of the most obnoxious rattle in my 850's dash as the plastic piece that surrounds the cigarette lighter and the OBD connector. What I would like to do this weekend is try to eliminate that rattle. I have been thinking about removing that piece, and I have a couple of questions:

1) I have figured out how to unscrew the piece from the rest of the dash (take out the ashtray first), and I can probably figure out how to un-do the cigarette lighter connections. But how do I remove the OBD connector? What I am trying to do is take out this plastic piece completely because...

2) ...I was thinking about putting some double-stick tape on the bottom of it, and also around the area where it sits, to give it a bit of a cushion. But I am wondering if anyone out there has any better ideas. One Volvo mechanic suggested using Vaseline, but doesn't that damage the plastic? If I use some sort of lubricant, I want something with a thicker consistency that WD40 or Tri-Flow, because I don't think those will work.

Suggestions anyone?

    ...rattle:... lubricate it? 850 1996

Kraut is right about the OBD plug. I've had mine out twice to replace shift indicator light bulbs.

If you are going to try lubrication, why take it apart? Try applying a small amount of thin lubricant around the edges before you take it apart. Give it some time to make its way to the squeak.

If you do take it apart, consider changing the shift indicator light bulb at the same time. All you need to do is remove two screws in the storage compartment, pull the insert under the emergency brake lever, and lift the console after the front is apart to get at it.

Volvo sells a silicon lubricant for the back of brake pads
to prevent brake squeel. The package labelling says it can
also be used for interior component squeeks. Odd combo, there.

Personally, I don't think lubrication would be the way to go
    for interior squeeks.

Tape sounds like it is worth trying.
By the way, relative to our recent discussion--I (temporarily, I hope) lost my e-mail address. Only one I have now is amsoild@aol.com (which I used for years before AMSOIL Inc threw a fit). Anyhow, if you've sent me anything over the past few days, please resend. Thanks.

The OBD conector simply slides out to the left once you get the screws out. There is enough wire on the OBD and lighter socket to lift the panel out several inches with out disconecting anything. Try some thin felt tape on the contact points.
