I have a '94 850T and ever since I can remember there have been no lights on the "P" "R" "N" "D" etc... letters by my Auto gear selector. I know what gear its in, because I can count ;) but... I was just wonderin if there should be lights there. It just seems like common sense. Thanks ~Cody

    The lights only work at night (makes sense if you never park in a dimly lit underground car park...) And, it is reasonably common for the bulb to fail - which is probably your situation.

    The replacement snaps in - the bulb and its holder are integral. However, I have found that with some dexterity you can actually modify the holder to i) accept a standard bulb available from most anywhere, or ii) accept a white LED which will last somewhat longer than any of Volvo's bulbs seem to.

    Cody,
    I have the same problem. I USED to have those lights lit up, but then they dissappeared. Don't laugh. Now comes the funny part. Whenever I slap the side of the gear selector thing, it lights right up. I do this everyday!!! Give it a shot. It works for me!! It's probably just a bad connector that needs a little slap in the ass every now and again. Let me know if it works!!!

      The light seems to be a problem in the s70's also. We have to do the same "slap" procedure as Costas mentioned on our S70. There are detailed instructions for replacing the light for the S/V70 on Bay 13 at Volvospeed.com. It's probably pretty similar for the 850. Doesn't look too hard. One of these days I'll try to fix it on ours.
