'Winter Setting' on an 850, How does it work? Bad for tranny maybe? 850

I live in San diego Ca,
Here, the "winter" switch on an 850 is used about as often as soap in Afganistan. But, two nights ago we had a hail storm. After peeling out at every green light, I remembered the "winter" button I've seen so many times before. I clicked it and the tires stopped spinning out. It made the engine sound as if I was riding the clutch. I have an automatic. It kind of crept into gear as opposed to "going forward". The function worked VERY well, but my question remains, is this bad for the tranny?

The trans is locked in two gears (3rd & 4th I think) to cut down torque/wheel spin, and it does work and in PA. is used often.
If were damaging, causing you to bitch at Volvo and the dealer, I don't think the switch would be there.
Sleet in Ca. Hmmmmm what a bitch.

winter locks the gear in third for start-off. think bicycles, ever try starting or when u're going up mountains and u stick the front gears at small and the rear gears at large? u peddle and peddle, it feels effortless, but u also don't move much.

Yes it does sound like the trans is slipping and yes it does work. The trans is locked in two of the higher gears to reduce torque/wheel spin.
If it was harmful and caused you to bitch at Volvo and the dealer I don't think the switch would be there.
Here in Pa. it is used a good bit.
