Oil leak around turbo unit S70

HI,

Got a oil drip aroung the Turbo unit somewhere. Is there a common thing to check? I could not pin point the leak.

Thanks...

Oil leak around turbo unit S70

Hi,

The turbo units that Volvo is using have a tendency to use a little oil. That is the Turbo unit will blow a little oil into the air duct that channels air from the Turbo unit to the intake manifold (this is normal). There is a Silicon Hose that connects the Turbo to the air intake duct. I have found that this hose leaks oil.

I would inspect the hose for Heat damage (i.e. a dark brown spot). If Heat damage is found than have the Silicon Hose replace. If no heat damage is found than I would just tighten the 2 clamps (one top, one bottom). That should stop the leak from the Silicon hose.

Also make sure that the two oil lines are not leaking. These oil lines are bullet proof but could leak. So check them out as well.

Good Luck,

Steven---

P.S. I hate my 99XC Volvo too. Cheap parts and some pretty poor engineering.

Try:

http://www.volvospeed.com/bay13.htm

Go to: "Repairs/ Maintainance" then "Oil" then "850SVC70 Turbo Oil Return Line" -fix a leaking oil return line on a turbo.

If thet's what it is (and it's an extremely common failure) the parts are only a few $.

Probably not a serious problem. If you're not getting smoke from the tailpipe at stop sign and red light pullaways, your turbo is OK.

Oil leaks external to the turbo can come from either the oil inlet line bolted to the top of the turbo cartridge, or from the flange where oil return line meets the bottom of the turbo. If one of these conditions exists, you'd smell oil burning on the hot metal. [to check for leaks at the turbo, you'll have to remove the heat shields.]

I believe, however, that leaks more commonly develop elsewhere at the top of the engine - near the turbo but not actually associated with it in any way. I'll leave it to others more knowledgaeble than I about these items. (With 85K on my car, maybe I'll learn something.)

The turbos in the 850/70-class are very reliable. You don't say how many miles on your car, but if it's under 200K just keep up with your oil changes. If under 100K, switch to synthetic.

They say that but you have to go hmmm sometimes

2000 C70 High Pressure Turbo. Turbo Replaced at 30k miles. Dealership of course said they have NEVER replaced a turbo before. Their Low pressure Turbo loaner exhibited the same symptom's my friend brought his car in for (including the distinct lack of power)....

Of course. Not every part in a car will be perfect, and an imperfect turbo with a shaft spinning at 150,000-200,000rpm could certainly become compromised. A turbo replaced at 30k is the exception, not the rule. Heck, a turbo replaced before 200K is the exception.

Since the poster wasn't complaining about loss of power or tailpipe smoke, it's fair to assume his turbo is fine for the moment. But he should locate the source of the leak. And if it turns out it is one of the oil lines to the turbo, a close inspection should be made during the repair...especially if there are signs of coking at the top of the return tube.

I agree completely. Good luck figuring this one out...
