Fresh air vent damper not closing, foam in the way V70-XC70 1998

What is the best way to access the duct behind the damper in the center fresh air vent?

I tried moving the obstructing foam with a long screwdriver but couldn't.

I then tried removing the grille assembly by prying what appear to be four barbs, but it wouldn't budge. Is this the way in, or are the control wheels/gears "too connected" to remove this grille?

Thanks!

    Tom,

You just pry the vent out. Use a screwdriver or dull blade (butterknife, etc.) under the right corner to get it started. Use a card between the blade and dash to protect the vinyl.

Grille comes off easily and no, it wasn't foam V70-XC70 1998

Thank you for your instruction. Being a highly visible area, I didn't want to take a chance. For other readers, there are two flat metal springs holding the grille with friction (visible through the grille). There are no barbs as I had thought. The control wheels are not attached to the grille.

Inside, the obstruction I thought was foam was really a rubber-like seal that I pushed out of the way, but was not really satisfied this will be a permenant fix. We'll see if this needs to be redone at a later date.

      Thanks Bryan!

My '98 V70 AWD had the same foam problem you describe in the far left vent at the driver's side. I also tried the screwdriver method and eventually pried out the vent and stuffed the foam seal so it wouldn't interfere with the movement of the vent shutoff. All's better now.
