'Service' light - 1997 850 GLT 850

The dealer always forgets to turn off the "service" reminder light on the dash. It's such a pain to go back in just to have them turn it off - EVERY time. Does anyone know how to pull the bulb? (How much dashboard dismantling is involved?)

Well, I can answer your question to some degree... If you are not afraid to get your hands dirty, you can reset it yourself, I'm not sure about depressing the trip meter for a few seconds. I don't have my manual handy but it can be reset using the diagnostic port under the hood. It is located, as you are looking at in the engine compartment, at the bottom left, in front of the compartment which is in front of the washer resevoir. If you want the instructions, write me back, at yngbear616@aol.com. Or, you can go to your auto store and buy a manual for 15 bucks, with the instructions. Don't be afraid to raise hell with the service guys... get yourself a free oil change for your aggrivation...

Don't laugh, somewhere I read, hold the odometer trip reset button
in for 5 sec. Try it.

I would estimate a 3 hour job since that's what it takes to replace instrument panel bulbs. A bad idea in my opinion. Personally I like the SERVICE light.

If I were you, I would either go back to the dealer and vent my irritation (Of course you then have to explain why you didn't notice that the light was on when you picked the car up), buy the service reset part from IPD, or....

If you are somewhat computer oriented, I would buy the OBD-11 system from www.obd-2.com. It hooks up to your computer (laptop preferred) and allows you to reset the Service light, check engine codes, and reset engine codes too.

Jordan,

Does the service light report things that go BOOM, or is that the function of the CHECK ENGINE light?

If the function of the service light is solely to remind you of service, then I think Dave's idea is a great one.

And please don't call someone's question "retarded." It says more about you than it does about the person you are refering to.

Ken
