Oil Plug Leak 850 1997

My '97 850 has been an excellent car after more than 78K miles. I've had a re-occuring problem through the years that has gotten worse. After some of the oil changes at the dealer, I found small oil drips in the garage coming from the Oil Pan plug/nut. I usually take it back and they tighten it and the leak goes away. During the most recent oil change, same thing, although this time after the re-tightening, it still leaked!! Does anyone have experience with this? Can it be fixed with a new plug?

Thanks!!

There is a crush washer under the plug. It should be
replaced with each change. It is made of aluminum and
costs less then a buck. Some other models of Volvo use
copper crush washers -- copper should not be used on the
    800 series.

First thing to determine is if the crush washer is being
replaced and is it the aluminum type. Also might want to
make sure it is from the oil pan bolt since leaks higher up
can run down. Do you have a model with a turbo? The turbo has
an oil drain line that often leaks (it is an inexpensive repair).
GLT models have turbos starting in 1997.

Ray, care to share why copper washers should not be used with the 800 series? My Volvo parts shop recently sold me the copper washers as they told me that Volvo are no longer selling the aluminum type to them anymore.

I think it is because copper and aluminum will galvanize and
could cause some corrosion on the surface of the oil pan
that the washer rests against (imagine if it becomes pitted).
(Dissimilar metals cause small electrcial flows between them
and copper is a good one to induce this.)

Any chemists out there who can back my theory (its just a
        theory, I'm not an expert)?

It is true that dissimilar metals can produce electochemical corrosion. But I believe that the principal reason for using aluminum washers is that they are softer and don't have to be torqued as much in order to deform. This protects the threads on the aluminum oil pans the 850/S70's have. Copper washers are commonly used with steel oil pans like I think older Volvos have.

Greg, I think you are correct. At http://volvospeed.com/oilplug.htm
they say the exact same thing and that over-torquing can lead
to thread damage and leaking problems. Thanks for the follow-up.
