Valve Ticking: V70-XC70 1998

Hi all!

I am new to the forum. I have a technical question. I have a 98 XC/AWD that has developed a valve tick as if it has a stuck lifter. Do these engines employ hydraulic lifters or is the valve lash manually adjusted? Otherwise, is it possible that a rocker arm is worn?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
William

Yours has hydraulic lifters, no rocker arms and they don't normally make any noise. Assuming your oil is clean, changed often enough, I'd suggest having it inspected by a Volvo dealer. They might need to check you oil pressure as you might have a problem with oil pan/sump o-rings causing lower than normal oil pressure.

I would also be interested in what people have to say about valve ticking in these engines (Mine is the '01 XC with light turbo) and mine developed a tick within 5000km (3000mi). Haven't adjusted the valves in my 244 in the last 5 years and it doesn't tick and my 144 has never ticked in the 2 years I've had it.

Yours has solid lifters which are not normally checked until its 105K mile inspection (US specs) according to Volvo. The newer '00 on up engines do make some slight valve train noise normally but shouldn't make a loud ticking noise.

My V70 XC AWD has had a ticking noise since I got it - I bought it in Aug with 140k miles on it (I got it for $14k due to high miles). I was told when I bought the car that the ticking noise was normal in these cars...guess I've been had?

I'd suggest having someone start by checking oil pressure. If it's just the oil pan, sump o-rings it's no big deal to repair other than labor time.
