Seat Heater Elements - Need to Replace 850 1993

Anyone done this? Do you know an alternative source for the elements? Any tips? I know I'll have to get Hog Ring pliers and some hog rings.

I want my buns to be warm again, so I will install new elements. And yes, it IS the elements that are bad. (It's NOT the T-stat, T-stat wire, switch or fuse!)

Check both upper and lower element circuits, unplugged with an ohm mater to determine which one has a broken wire, IF that's the problem. Make sure there's 12 volts going to the elements first. It's usually only one of the two elements per side, usually the lower one. It's also not exactly a "fun" job. It can be done in the car with the seat unbolted but it's easier if the seat is removed from the car. Be carefull not to bump the SIPS bag actuator when (if) removing the seat.

Thanks for the reply, Captain Ron. What are is the proper resistance readings for a good and bad element?

I will remove the seat to do the job. My '93 doesn't have the side airbags.

you shouldn't have any resistance (or very little) if the elements were good, and tons/mega-ohms/OL if its open/bad. My bet is the only one that is bad is the one on the seat bottom, it gets the most use. I have never replaced a back element yet. Taking the seat out is the way to go, just start cutting hog rings and pulling the seat back as you go. It's good clean work.
