Day Time Running Lights 2001 S60T5 S60 2001

Does anyone know how to turn off the daytime running lights, without going to the dealer.

Thanks
Bob

Maybe n0v80r will dial into this thread and supply us with a bypass wiring diagram. Seems in the S60's that a lot of functions are controlled by processors, and the problem with Volvo's implementation of DRL's is that you burn out headlamps, corner and tail lights, and instrument panels lights when what you really want is a pair of lights forward. (In my S70, I rewired so I can use the foglights as DRL's.)

Why would you want to turn off the lights, they are a safety feature that helps other motorists and pedestrians spot you?

Granddad- r u telling me you believe that bolognY about DRLs. I've learned to not believe everything the DOT/USGOV/INsurance companies etc. push in front my face. I maintain that common sense should dictate that you turn on your lights in ANY low light/cloudy conditions; but why have them on in the middle of a bright sunny day when its 80degrees??? R U sure it's not an arrangement bet bulb manufactures and car makers and the other groups??!! What they need to have is auto turn-on lights when the place gets cloudy/dark. they have rain sensitive wipers, why not a sensor on the dash or in the bumper to sense darkness and turn lights on for you.. Just my 2 pesos,BD

DOT and the Insurance co's actually say very little about DRL's. But there is a lot of data showing they are highly effective - especially in bright sunny conditions on dry pavement, when most accidents occur.

It's not a scam by lamp manufacturers, though they would obviously stand to benefit.

Volvo's implementation of DRL's is terrible. They make the driver run all their lights - headlights, tail lamps, instrument cluster lights. What a waste. (GM does it best, I think, with a pair of low power forward lights only.) In my case, I wired my foglights for independent use, so I can use them as my DRL's.

Well, I can say with all honesty that I do not believe what the DOT/USGOV/INsurance tells me because I do not live in the US. I live in Canada where DRLs have been mandatory for years and where I have had first hand experience comparing cars that had them and cars that did not. What I have found is that a DRLs alert a driver to oncoming traffic more than vehicles that do not. When you see the lights, you actually are on a higher level of alert. These days, drivers need all the alert that can receive being distracted by cell phones, sat nav systems and anything else a car company can squeeze onto the dash and centre console.

Hella has published date (it's somewhere on their website I believe) attesting to their efficacy; the Canadaians also have data. The local police chief here once showed me an eye-popping statistic about how effective they are in reducing daytime accidents. I won't quote the number, but if it's even a third of what I saw it's a strong case for DRL's.

Some countries that require DRL's (certain Scandinavian countries and Canada come to mind) have a lot of twilight and two-lane rural roads. It seems intuituve that DRL's make an awful lot of sense there.

Though you don't exactly become invisible if you run without DRL's, they aid in early visual acquisition (detection), depth perception and visual tracking. In winter conditions with extreme solar glare with the sun behind you, they become very useful (as you CAN become invisible in these circumstances).

I've wired my lights so my foglights (cheap H1 bulbs) are my DRL's - sparing my tail lamps, instrument panels lights and VisionPlus capsules from the burden of full-time operation.

I can't agree with you more about daytime running lights! What I want to do is shut off my tail lights and instruments lights in the daytime hours, do you have any wiring schematics?
          Thanks
          Bob

I can send you a diagram for the S70/850 but I think the S60's are quite different. I'll check with n0v8or to see if he's come up with anything yet.

Bob, the setting is in the main computer. After some discussion with the dealer, they agreed to turn them off during the initial check of the computer. Otherwise they wanted an additional $45.00 for resetting a computer setting. I finally told the service manager that I wanted it done, and would not pay to have it reset, period. They decided a satisfied customer, was worth more than $45.00. The short answer is no.

    Sam in Cinci.
