Temp Gauge Readings 850 1994

Hi all,
The temp gauge on my wifes 850 is acting strangely. It will not move, noticeably, at times even after driving for up to 50 minutes. Then, it will move to the "regular" position - halfway up. Then it won't move again. I checked the diagnostic codes - both before driving and then after driving a few minutes. No fault code detected. I checked the wiring as best I could. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Mike

Why not replace the thermostat and see if the problem goes away?

My first guess would be a thermostat stuck open, change the thermostat and coolant while your at it and see if the car doesn't warm up correctly. The below link has a pictorial post on replacing the thermostat.

Be forewarned, the #40 torx head bolts that hold the water outlet are sometimes hard to get out, you will need a quality driver to remove them, the one closest to the block is real hard to get with a torx-bit adapter for a ratchet.
