Glove Box Fix: $3 receiver replacement included in the $40 handle/lock package? 850 1993

I, like many others, have a broken glove box assembly. I've seen the posts that say all you have to do is carefully cut the small $3 receiver piece. Once I cut that, what parts do I need to replace? I went to the dealer and told the parts guy what I was going to do. He looked in the parts list and didn't see any small $3 part for the glovebox. The only part he did see, which he showed me, was a package containing the exterior handle and the entire opening mechanism. My question is, is this $40 pack of parts all I need to fix this, or do I also need to find the receiver part separately? It seemed that if I bought this kit, it would have the locking mechanism too, while the posts I've seen say you don't have to replace the key cylinder. Anyone whose been through this and knows everything I should do, please help. Thanks.

My dealer charged me $15.00 for the $3.00 piece and I paid $40.00 for the other. Like you and many others, my glove box locked shut without anyway to open it. I tried prying the dash apart, but that was a futile attempt and I thought wisely that I would break it, so I hacksawed the wire looking piece. When I went to the dealer to buy the parts (the only people who had them), they rolled their eyes, knowingly, saying...."oh, that problem again." Anyway, long story short, only the nub part of the door assembly was broken, so I have bookoo parts for a later repair if needed. Just pissed that I got stiffed $15.00 for a so called $3.00 part that probably costs pennies to produce.

I just repaired the glove box in my 97.Volvo packages the lock mechanism w/o the lock cylinder in a package for approx $ 40.00.The catch assembly is separate and approx $ 3.00.You`ll need the catch, which is easily replaced by loosening the box and exposing the screws. The hard part is cutting thru the catch w/o damaging the door cover. The whole job took about 30 minutes.

That little reciever part is not included in the 40 buck kit. You will need it.
I fixed my box 2 weeks ago. I bought the little metal bar that I had cut(to get inside the glove) and the 40 dollar parts kit to replace the lever arms, etc. contained inside the glove box door.

All I needed was to replace a tiny little broken part in the glove box mechanism, located in the glove door. A part at the end of the arms that has a little nub of metal on it had snapped. It had broken and would not make the catch pull back so that the door would open. It is poorly made and is probably what the majority of these "locked" glove box problems are. I replaced the little metal bit and am left with the rest of the kit. 40 bucks for a 2 dollar part - yuck.

The lock mechanism was not involved at all with my "locked box" so don't mess with that unless you need to.

The part you cut is called a "lock brace" part number 6818223, and the latch you need is 6818224. That should do it for parts.
