Could a rear main seal leak be caused by a side impact collision? 850 1996

Our sedan was "T-boned" by a suburban in the passanger side. The impact caused the driver front wheel to strike a median and then colapse under the vehicle. The following front end parts were replaced and hopefully will be representative of the amound of damage sustained: LF tie rod end, LF lwr ball joint, LF knuckle & hub assy, Lt central arm support subframe, Lt drive axle assy, L frt susp strut assy, L LWR frt susp control arm assy, L Frt susp stab bar link. The vehicle was in the shop for 120 days and the total repair bill was in excess of $10,000.00. The morning after we took posession of the car we noticed an oil leak. The source of the leak was just traced to the rear main seal. I am wondering if this is a case of hidden damage associated with the accident or simply a coincidence. I can e-mail photos of the damage if it will help in answering my question. The bottom line here is if there is no chance that this could be accident related I will pay the bill myself, otherwise the insurance will write a supplimental claim. Thanks for your opinions.
Paul

Honestly no, it's simply not possible but as mentioned if you can get your insurance co to believe it, more power to you (not that I condone fraud however).

Well, I would try to get the insurance to write a supplemental claim for that. The rear main is well protected by the transmission, so it's unlikely that it caused it (in my opinion). For something to really blast the seal out of whack, it would've been such a bad hit that the car would have been a serious mess.

In other words, it shouldn't happen that way.

The thing is, maybe it DID jar the seal just because of the impact. That's quite a lot of repair to the car. I'd just state to the insurance company that there was NO oil leak before the car got hit, and see what they do. Also sitting for 120 days probably wasn't much help either. Although that's a common maintenance item on that car anyway. Try to get insurance to pay for that.

HEY CHRIS: the main seal is a common maintenance item????? REALLY? As yet all I own are RWD's and I like the 850's . Is it all 850 and S70 years and how many miles? that's no cheap MAINTENANCE FIX. thanks mark.

Yes, but it's not like the evaporators or anything like that. Just that they don't/haven't been lasting as long as some of the RWD seals. But I don't know what the deal is with the later S70 cars. The maintenance is expensive, but we're not talking 25,000 miles apiece either. Seems more like 100k or so, but some cars seem never to need it. I suppose that it makes a difference if you get frequent oil changes, keep the PCV system in good shape, drive highway miles, etc. You could cook a RWD seal in the time that the 850s need it also. It's a biggie job in that car.

Not to scare you. I haven't really seen a lot of the later models have that problem.
