'Transmission service required' V70-XC70 2007

Greetings,

'07 XC70 has a "transmission service required" message, and it goes into a mode where it doesn't show what gear it's in; rather than P, R, N, or D, there is simply a "-" on the gauge reading. It doesn't always do this, but it has done it three times in the last couple weeks. Otherwise, it seems fine. Any thoughts?

I don’t know the dash symbols on your car. So the transmission still operates normally when it’s in this mode? It’s not a “limp home mode” type of thing? Unlike new cars, does your car still have a transmission dipstick so you can check fluid level? That’s all I’ve got so far…

Thank you for responding. I should have mentioned that the car does not shift as it should. It seems to be stuck in a higher gear, almost like starting from a stop in winter mode. I can "manually" shift, and there is a pretty hard upshift from 1st to 2nd when I do it this way (whether or not I take my foot from the accelerator as I shift).

Sounds like it might be going into “limp home mode”. The transmission wants to stay in a higher gear in order to protect itself from damage. It may be something minor, but I wouldn’t screw around with it. Have it checked out.
