V70 2.4T wagon ('02, 240K miles) has gas leak above gas tank V70-XC70 2002

Hello fellow BB friends:

Just noticed that my wife's '02 V70 2.4T wagon has a slow gas leak. When looking under the car, it appears to be coming from the top of the gas tank. Any thoughts? Hopefully not a fuel pump going bad. The car runs fine and there are no error codes.

Thanks,

Bernie

It’s most likely to be a leaking fuel pressure or return line. Not the fuel pump. If original, those fuel lines are 22 years old and one could be leaking. Could also be a leaky seal on the sending unit. Can you access the top of the tank?

        @jwalker:

Just got back from the dealer, who confirmed the leak is coming from the top of the gas tank. To get to the root cause, he has to take out the rear seats to get access to the tank's access panels. Estimated Cost: $500.

Question: How difficult would it be for me to take out the rear seats and remove the access panels? I'm a pretty good backyard mechanic and have time on the weekends to tinker.

        Thanks,

        Bernie

          Hey Bernie,

I say go for it! I owned 2 850’s where access was pretty easy. I know that on early S70’s and V70/XC70’s through MY 2000 it was also pretty straight forward to remove the seats and get at the access panel. I’m assuming your car isn’t any different than those. You could do a search here on the Brickboard or on the internet for guidance and to find out the details before jumping in.

One caveat - You don’t have any rear air bags in your model do you? If you do, disconnect the battery for at least 30 minutes before starting work for safety’s sake….

          Jim

            Hi Jim:

You talked me into it, and removal of the rear seat to get access to the fuel pump was easy. I noticed fuel in the upper "cup" of the fuel pump, and read that a hairline fracture there is common around 200 Kmiles. The easy fix is to clean out the crud in that cup and fill it with a two-part epoxy. Your thoughts?

            Thx.

            Bernie

Sounds like a plan, Bernie. At their cost 💲💲💲, you don’t want to buy a Volvo fuel pump unless absolutely necessary… Curious - Which epoxy are you going to use? Let us know how it works out for you.

Sidebar - My parents owned a 2001 Volvo V70. That car might have saved my Dad’s life. He was stopped in the breakdown lane due to icy conditions. Another driver lost control and rear-ended him on the highway. Amazingly, he walked away with minor injuries!

Thanks Jim. I looked at a video online and, it looked pretty straight-forward. Appreciate the advice on the airbag (not sure if it has rear seat airbags). Will try to take a look this weekend, and post findings.
