Coil Pack Replacement - S40 S40-V40

I thank the guys who helped me out on the windshield washer fluid reservoir and possible fixes.

Suddenly yesterday the engine started misfiring, then would smooth out, more smooth than anything, so I started looking into it. My little OBD reader signaled a misfire on one of the two coil packs, so my first question is does the 2003 S40 have a ignition coil pack that is unique to that year?

I took at to a shop this morning and was quoted a huge amount of money, and they had about 7 things that they "wanted" to replace and I saw their point, but I am not in a position to do the whole list, I just want to make the car more drivable by correcting what I thought to be defective, and my OBD matched with theirs.

Has anybody done this job? On an S40 of that year, 2003 that my erstwhile shop said was unique to the year. He has retired so I was looking for a new garage. They were flagging entirely too many repair items for my taste. I want one of two coil packs replaced, not a bunch of other stuff. I am told it was not a difficult job anyway!

Can anyone help?

Doug

I have purchased mine for $15 on Amazon for my 2007 xc70. You can check the fit for your car on Amazon. Very easy to replace.

Volvo part 1275602 is what you want. Both coil packs are identical. They are not unique to a specific year but I don't think they were widely used.

This video should help if only to familiarize yourself with the location of the coils.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dWCv9aqeEw

The car in the video is a few years older than yours but it has the same ignition system.

The biggest problem with this vid is that the guy seems to be using a Go Pro or the like on a head band, which is great if you're jumping off a cliff for the ten thousandth You Tube BASE jumping video, but not so much for car repair. He frequently refers to items just outside of the shot. So much for production values.

However, it's good enough to locate and replace the defective coil pack if you do not already know where it is.

But I would second Bill's suggestion to check the connections and I would go a bit further and say pull the plugs to see if any of the electrodes are getting cruddy.

Are you able to tell which coil pack seems to be the problem? You might just want to replace them both if they are of the same age...like maybe the original ones.

FCP has them for $81.99 each (Genuine Volvo).

    Coil Pack Replacement - S40 S40-V40

    Hi Doug,

    Are you adverse to DIY?
Here's a wide variety of coil packs for your car:
    https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/volvo,2003,s40,1.9l+l4+turbocharged,1433943,ignition,ignition+coil,7060

Do it yourself and avoid the gigantic markup of parts by greedy mechanics
who aren't happy with $110/hr to change a wiper blade.

Before replacing coil packs, I'd survey all of the two-pin bullet connectors
to the coil packs. They can fail with age. Make sure they are firmly in the connector shells and not able to be pulled back and out of the shell.
You can clean the coil pack male bullet pins with a toothbrush and 90% isopropyl alcohol and blow out with air. Then use some anti corrosion zinc paste (Penetrox-A) on the male pins.
If you find any broken female pins /pigtails you can get new pigtails to splice in at www.davebarton.com (Volvo wiring guru)

    Bill

      Coil Pack Replacement - S40 S40-V40

Thanks for the info thus far, I will be throwing a lavish party soon for all the people who have helped.

BUT...for now the source of the info that the 2003 takes a coil pack that is unique to that year is my former Volvo specialist of many years, who is retired and hence not available anymore.

So can we say with certainty that a coil pack that is packaged as one for the 2003 S40 is not cylinder specific? That they can go to any of the four cylinders?

I don't want to get into going to the auto parts store five times because each trip yielded slightly incompatible part? We know that never takes place!

Does anyone know whether supplying the VIN and matching that to a coil pack will eliminate the doubt?

In a city the size of Dallas there must be a store that has it. The Catch 22 is the car I would use to go shop for the part is the same one that is sitting in the garage, waiting....

      Thanks a lot for whatever

      Doug

        Coil Pack Replacement - S40 S40-V40

        Hi Doug,

That's really sporting of you to invite us to that party, will you send the
company jet, or do we use spin-your-own-prop airline?

The 2003 s40 has two engines identified by the VIN

        L4-1.9L Turbo VIN 29 B4204T3
        L4-1.9L Turbo VIN 27 B4204T4

Use that info when you search for parts, impress the parts guys.

        Bill

AFAIK - All coil packs are interchangeable. If they are cylinder specific on 2003 S40 then that model year would indeed be unique. Worth a try calling a Volvo dealer’s Parts department. They might be willing to help you. Another option is to call or do an online search for 2003 S40 coil packs at Volvo specialists such as IPDUSA or FCPEURO.

I know nothing about the coil packs in your model year car. However, before you pay someone else to replace it, I strongly suggest researching the job and do it yourself. Most coil packs are easy to replace…
