AC Condensate drain location? V70-XC70 2008

2008 V70 3.2.

Where is / are the air conditioner condensate drains located? Three hour drive in 95 degree / 85% humidity and mist started blowing out of the center vents. Then we had drips on our feet in left and right turns. No sign of condensate dripping under the car when parked so the drain(s) must be clogged.

Where are they located? Not through the firewall so must be under the cabin near the dash somewhere.

Thanks!

Erwin

AC Condensate drain location? V70-XC70 2008

Hi,

I am a Volvo 240 man so I cannot give you any specifics on what to remove in panels on your car.

I can say this that in all refrigeration designs the water flows downstream from the cooling fins to a catch basin.
In the bottom of that, in the center usually there is a drain port.
On the end of that, there is tube long enough to have a bend in it to create a water barrier.
In plumbing it’s call a “P”trap. Its job is to stop moist air from migrating up to the cold coils from the outside.
With varying amounts of air flow through plenums it is still possible to create some negative pressure that could draw air upwards depending on where the blower is located.
Some automotive designers have to get creative to make compromises and that creates a need for another solution.
An adage used among engineers is … if you put a marble in your mouth, to suck while designing and haven’t taken it out at least three times, you haven’t thought about it long enough to remove its snafus.

Hence the term …. We or I dropped the a ball on that one!
When I was growing up my neighbor we could only afford Marbles.
Games were simple and learned like KISSING. Keep It Simple Stupid. Better if not so fast! 🤭

On vehicles a long pipe with a “P” trap is not practical due to confinements.
What they use is a rubber molded tube with a tip built like a “ducks bill.”

You should be able to find it directly below the air conditioning evaporator coils in the cabin
It will depend on where it is located you should be able to reach it from the side someplace and hopefully give it a squeeze above the ducks bill.
If not you need to go under the car and look up above where the evaporator is located.
It has to stick out through the cars body someplace. It’s not uncommon for it to drip on a transmission in RWD CARS. But on YOURS I CANNOT help farther but to follow gravity.

On your age car it’s an accumulation of debris that might have grown some algae and that substance might do well if after you get it opened up is to flush some warm soapy water solution from above into the evaporator.
Or if desperate, back up through the rubber duck bill to agitate that mass a let it drain out.
A small or tiny diameter hose length with about a CUP OF solution blown LIGHTLY upwards might do the trick. You only need to flood the drain pan a little as it is shallow due to where it’s installed.
Think of your home refrigerator defrosting drain pan at the bottom behind a kick panel.
It get neglected by every owner. A Car’s AC is the same scenario.

This method can work on problematic cars as to getting access and to remove odors of musty smells.
Any good AC shops should be able to guide you to where it is or offer their services.

Hope this helps to glean some useful ideas for your car.🚙

Phil

Hello,

I’m sure glad someone responded to his post besides me.

Those pictures seem to be as straight forward as working on a 240 with the panels being a whole lot smaller.
Things appear to be more compact underneath there.

I always felt that you needed pancake hands to work on these newer cars.

Thank for your time.

Phil
