Possible vacuum leak in air cleaner

While doing a smoke test on my 2002 V70, observed smoke coming from the switching device, actually very tiny opening that appears to be manufactured by Volvo?

Thought this may have caused it to foul the MAF sensor and dropped out of cruise for an unpleasant 50 mile ride back to Ohio!

    ETB’s

Another thought just popped into my head. Haven’t thought about ETB’s in a long time. You mentioned it in an earlier post but nothing further. ETB’s were a real issue for 2001 and 2002 V70’s and XC’s. Less so in 2003’s and newer.

Has yours been replaced? Most likely at least once at your car’s mileage. You can identify an original and a replacement by sticker color. I forget the difference, but do seem to remember that yellow was one color?? Check into it….

      ETB’s

As it turned out a lot of my misfires were in the ETB! A XeMODEX had been replaced by PO and I mistakenly assumed it was OK! Contacted Joshua and purchased a rebuilt ETB, incredibly fast shipping out of Canada!
All the weird ETB issues are gone, getting MPG's in the high 20's!
Still waiting for a $100 core credit on $500 part?

Don’t know about the switching device leak. Is it necessary for them to be 100% sealed?

At your car’s age, if you haven’t already replaced your throttle body hose it is overdue. Sometimes the cracks and leaks are evident. Other times they are subtle. If you haven’t replaced it, remove it and inspect thoroughly. A bad throttle body hose can cause a variety of issues.
