Purchasing a used Volvo XC70 AWD (2013 to 2016 years) V70-XC70

Hello All: I’m interested in purchasing a used Volvo XC70 AWD (2013 to 2016 years). I spoke with an area used Volvo shop in my area and they said the T6 Volvo engines are a better choice than the T5 versions. The said that the T5 versions start to have oil consumption problems. Is this true? They purchase used Volvos from auctions and fix them up and sell them. I have been looking for a used XC70 AWD for a while now and have passed up quite a few T5 Volvos hoping to find a T6 with the Trim and Options I’m looking for. I currently see a lot of Volvo XC70 T5 for sale. Is it worth the wait or are the dealers comments too picky? Look forward to everyone’s comments. Thanks

The below link details a class action suit against Volvo. Volvo also extended the warranty on those models to 8 years or 100k miles. Volvo does an oil consumption test first and if excessive will fix the problem for free. An out-of-pocket piston and ring job by Volvo will run $10 or $11k. Like any purchase make sure service records are complete.

I've heard similar stories about the late 5-cylinder motors. Faulty piston rings. One would think though that by now those cars with faulty piston rings have already been flushed out and engines rebuilt/replaced?

Also keep in mind that regardless of the flavor, T5, T6 or 3.2, any of them that haven't been maintained will suffer in similar fashion. These things do not respond well to skipped oil changes! Look for meticulous service records.

Press your Volvo shop as to why the T6 and not the normally aspirated 3.2 6-cylinder. That could expand the pool.

    Best of luck,
    Will

Drove a 1993 850 NA 5 cylinder for 30 years and 242,000 miles. No oil problems at all. Changed oil every 5k miles. There has been reported oil consumption problems with 2012 - 2016 5 cylinder using oil and low oil light not coming on, resulting in engine failure. A google search will show some of the issues. The problem was a new type of piston ring that allowed excessive consumption. Also, the dip stick was too long, or something, and it appeared to show OK oil level when it was low.

Ok, good to know about the oil issue.

I had 2 850’s. A 93 and a 95. No serious oil issue with either one. The 95 started using a quart every 2k miles at around 220k miles. Still ran well at 251k when I sold it. The valve seals were leaking. A common high mileage issue with 5 cylinders of that era. Used conventional oil then. Would have been fine with synthetic. The white block engines don’t like conventional oil…

I have a 2007 xc70 T5. It has 310,000 miles and no oil consumption. It drives like a rocket.

This is where this thread starts to get murky. Hopefully, the OP will clarify whether he is referring to the T5 with a 5 cylinder engine or the T5 with a 4 cylinder engine. Just read up on this. Volvo used the T5 engine with 5 cylinder in the 2013-14 XC70's (probably same or similar to your car's engine). They switched to a T5 4 cylinder engine in MY 2015. Perhaps the oil consumption issue is only with the 4 cylinder model years?? I know the early T5"s are good engines. Almost bought a couple.

I can't address your T5 inquiry. No experience with those specific T5 engines. I can say that a friend of mine bought a 2011 XC70 T6 new. It is a terrific engine with loads of power and torque! She has had no issues with that engine.
