oil leak V70-XC70

i drive a 99 volvo s70 and i thought i had a p/s leak it was actually an oil leak im down 2 qts where should i look its dripping down on the passenger side of car should i be looking at all the seals cam intake and crank seal behind harmonic balancer really tough to see where come from

I did a slow driving flush on y 940 that had leaks,,I added a pint of flush to the oil,& then drove 25 miles never exceeding 25mph on an old slow road,,then I flushed it let it drip over night, took coil wire off,,,to be careful
Then added5 qts synthetic& a new filter
I drove it afterwards then had no leaks at all for 6 mos.!!

the problem was the seal under the front cam was pushing in and out while driving all fixed

Did you find the reason the seal was being pressed out?

This is generally due to increased crankcase pressure caused by a
clogged EGR system. You can use the search engine to find out
about "The glove test" to check this yourself.

You should be using only full synthetic motor oil that is less
prone to clogging up the EGR and cylinder head oil passages.

If there's motor oil leaking on your T-belt and S-belt
that's very bad news. You need to get the cover off and inspect ASAP.

Make sure that you use only full synthetic oil in that engine.
Dyno oil is poison as it can clog up the EGR and cylinder head oil passages.
Clogged EGR will raise crankcase pressure and put pressure on the oil seals
as Jim pointed out. The last thing you want is a blown out rear main seal.

Synthetic oil in old engine will leak out immediately.
You will have leaks you didn't have before.

Dyno oil can and does clog up the EGR system and cylinder head oil galleries.

What will make the oil pour out are clogged EGR systems that cause increased crankcase pressure enough to pop out the engine seals.

Use full Synthetic oil in all Volvo engines for best results.

Bill is 100% correct. Also, it is a myth that after converting to synthetic new seal leaks will develop. The worst that might happen is that the seal(s) that are already leaking might temporarily leak more. This happens because synthetic oil cleans the seals of gunk (oil gunk can help a seal a leaky seal) possibly causing a little more leaking. Long term synthetic can rejuvenate the seal (if not blown out) and the leak can eventually disappear.

Synthetic is also good in trannies and PS systems. For example: The rack in my 95 850 was leaking. After converting to Mobil 1 synthetic the leak stopped in about a month…:)

Timing belt side oil leaks are often cam seals, especially if high miles. Check out the issue with RobertDIY on YouTube. Replacement is pretty complex. A good time to renew the timing belt.

Agree with Derek. Sounds like it could be the cam intake seal. Unfortunate, since the rear (exhaust) cam seal is easier to access. Crank seals don’t leak very often. As with the PS, clean the area. Specifically, the front of the cylinder head to see if that intake camshaft seal is the culprit.

Is your PCV system clear? If it’s clogged seals will continue to leak.
