I purchased a used 2016 XC90 T8 Inscription Plug-In Hybrid (it had just over 12,000 miles on it). Just prior to the expiration of the factory warranty I purchased the Volvo VIP Platinum Protection plan which basically extended the factory warranty for another 5 years/60,000 miles. It wasn't cheap and was just shy of $5,000. That warranty is about to expire in 4,000 miles (the XC90 T8 has just over 105,000 miles). Volvo does not sell further warranties. I have made some limited inquiries, but have been shocked and disappointed by the coverage offered and the size of the premiums charged by a substitute company recommended by the company that managed Volvo VIP Platinum Plan. I hasten to add this may be the reality of trying to find a "full manufacturer's warranty" on a Volvo with over 100K miles on the odometer and I may be forced to embrace it if I want to continue the coverage.

Before I give up, I wanted to know if anyone in this Volvo community has found a company that provides good coverage (and service) for a reasonable premium on Volvo with excess of 100K miles. Thank you in advance to all who respond.

I’ve only bought an extended warranty one time and it was on a low milage Dodge Dakota pickup. I can only imagine that purchasing a warranty on a higher mileage Volvo would be like buying a life insurance policy at 70 years old. You might try asking an independent Volvo repair shop if they have any opinion about which company is less likely to weasel out of paying a repair bill due to “certain clauses” in the contract.

Thanks for your response. I'm sorry I did not respond sooner. I'm still shopping around. The Volvo Platinum which I have now, will be expiring soon. I call the company that manages the claims for Volvo called FWS, Inc. and it is based in Florida. I contacted FWS, Inc. and was offered the most basic policy (actually two steps down from my current Platinum policy) for a fee over close to $6K. I have spoken to my local Volvo dealer and have offered similarly priced alternatives. It is daunting.

You are giving out good advice on contractual weaseling out.
There was one in particular advertising for a long while that I don’t hear anymore on media.
I’m thinking they moved out of my state as there was a clause that their policies were not offered in California.
I checked into it a wee bit and saw that they were licensed in Florida.
Not my favorite state to buy anything from.
They listed another state they operated from but their name flipped flopped technically around different ways to shirt into acceptable state laws. Probably avoided law suits that way.

I personally would just put any payment away that I would make to those people to have repairs done from a place of my choice.

I trust my work best as I can do as good as some of these mechanics that are learning on someone else’s car.
I would say learn to do the work yourself.
Buy or rent any tools with the those payments.
You can take an automotive class in junior colleges.
Lots of classes offer theories only from textbooks and some have facilities with tools in heavy populated cities.
It can be an investment and an adventure in one’s own self, while learning.

Sorry for my delay in responding. I'm still shopping around, but intimidated by the fees quoted me. I may just have to let my policy lapse and just keep my fingers crossed. I don't possess the knowledge or skill to fix my XC90 T8. It is a beautiful Volvo but the technology is beyond me.
