Interior Door Handle on rear passenger door stopped working - What to do? V70-XC70

Hello All,

I just purchased a 2006 V70 wagon, non-turbo with FWD and with a 168,000 miles. The other day, my niece was getting out of the rear passenger side door when the interior release handle stopped working. The handle is stuck in the "open" position, that is, it does not return to its natural resting position. I have left it in the "open" position because I do not want to force in back into position and possibly break something in the process. The problem now is you cannot open the door from inside the car. Instead you can only open this door using the outside handle. An inconvenience.

It is almost as if a cable that is attached to the release handle has snapped. That is pure speculation on my part. I haven't tried opening the door panel yet because I want some advice and counsel on what has caused this problem and how you go about fixing it (if I can as a layman). Thank you to all who respond. I still like this Volvo. I hope it gives me years of service.

Hugh

There is a Lock Cable that links the Door Actuator (power lock) to the spring-loaded door handle. Each of the four doors has different part numbers because the locking components are different; ask your Volvo shop to spec out the correct part(s) and part numbers for the RH/passenger side rear door.

The door locking components are accessed by removing the door interior panel. There may be some visual clues about what's going on with the lock and door handle.
