XC90 Instrument Cluster Fail

05 XC90 with a 2.5t (if it matters), instrument cluster completely failed. Nothing worked on it. I pulled off the battery cables and left if sit for several hours. The cluster has worked intermittently since then. Currently, the digital readouts will show gibberish, and none of the needles will move. All might work for a minute while driving here and there and then revert back to its non-working status.

Is repairing the cluster an option, or is the problem somewhere else?

A year or more ago, the gas gauge stopped working. In December when the temps were at zero, the gauge amazingly started working. But now the whole cluster is a problem.

I found the site ecutesting.com which claims to repair them. Not sure if I should give it a go or if the problem is somewhere else.

I see Xemodex charges $450 to repair your DIM or $550 for a replacement. I assume there’s a core fee for the replacement?? Years ago the DIM in my 2003 V70 went wonky but I was able to procure a compatible replacement, from a well known Volvo wrecking yard that is no longer in business, for about $125. Today the equivalent wrecking yard would be Erie Volvo parts. But in order for them to provide you with a compatible unit you would need to pull your old one out and give them the code numbers on the backside.

Whatever you do, don’t turn the ignition on while the DIM is removed or you will set an SRS fault code that can be a nuisance to have reset.

    XC90 Instrument Cluster Fail

    Hi

I've had to repair instrument clusters in 740 850's and now a 940.
Odometer gears, Blown lights, and cold solder joints on the PCB flex cards.
Do you have the Volvo wiring diagram/fault tracing manual for your model year?
Or provide a link to it on line, It should be easy to repair.

How difficult is it to get the cluster out to work on?
From the sounds of it you have a bad solder joint or loose connector pin in the instrument cluster PCB in the +12VDC supply circuit.
With the cluster out, you will probe the 12vdc to find out where it gets lost and make the solder joint or faulty connector repair.

It should be easy to find if you have the Volvo wiring book.

My last adventure was with my 940 that had a chronic gas gauge dead that Volvo never could repair. They replaced the meter assembly but not the entire instrument cluster.
It was a nasty intermittent failure and finally was resolved
by soldering a jumper on the plastic Yazaki PCB where the +12VDC track went to the back side for 1 inch and up top again. The joint failed on the back
    side of the PCB.
I needed to add more vacuum line to the boost gauge to be able to pull the cluster out far enough and flip over to see the PCB and use the VOM to find
    the fault.

You have to catch it when it's broken, is the secret.

    Bill

    Disclaimer:
I have no experience with this issue...:)

However, I remember Klaus and others posting that this a reputable company for DIM and other electronics repairs for Volvo. Check out their website. They give you the choice of having yours fixed or buying a remanufactured DIM.
