Hello All,
I just replaced the interior bulb for the ashtray on my 1999 V70 AWD XC Wagon. It is a clear bulb, with a black plastic base with two metal prongs. The part number for this bulb is # 3545170. I believe the same bulb is used on the 850 ashtray too. I had two bulbs in reserve and now I have one. I called my Volvo dealer and it wanted $31 for a single bulb. I looked at FCP Euro, iPd, Inc. and EEuro Parts and the cheapest price without shipping was $20. I looked on Amazon and Ebay and the prices quoted were higher.
I use these bulbs on my two 850 wagons and my XC, so I like to have spares. Can anyone recommend a source where I can obtain these bulbs for less than $20 each? It seems a ridiculous price for a bulb that is probably mass produced. Thanks to all who respond.

Hello,
I want to share a resource. I know some have suggested I pull the old bulb out and insert a replacement bulb and soder the connecting strings. I don't know if I could do that successfully. On a whim I called a Volvo salvage yard (Volvuparts, 751 Trabert Ave., NW, Atlanta, GA 30318)888-280-4057 or 404-352-3403. They sell new bulbs at $15 each with s/h charge of $6. I do not have any financial interest in this salvage yard, though I have found them to be helpful in finding parts for my 3 old Volvo wagons. Its price was the lowest I came across for a new bulb that would just plug right in like the old one. My Volvo dealer wanted $31 for the bulb and I was told its wholesale price was $20, hence my desire to share this information. God willing, I may only buy one or two of these bulbs in my lifetime. Thank you again for all who responded to my query.

Hi "Someone claiming to be Hugh",
Send me your dead bulb with return envelope and postage,
and I'll repair your old bulb with a genuine 14 volt grain of wheat lamp
for free providing you start supporting Brickboard.
You can get my email address from my profile.

Hello All,
I want to express my collective "Thanks!" to all that responded. You have armed me with a wealth of information and options to pursue to avoid paying $31.00 a bulb as requested by my local dealer.
The bulb as pointed out below, in one of the responses, is not a wedge bulb. It is soldered into the black plastic base. It is not designed to just pull the bulb out and insert a new bulb. My concern is, I may not be able to force the strands of a replacement bulb in place to soldered them to insure a secure contact.
Thanks to all your responses I am in a better position to address this issue. So let me say again "Thanks!" to all who responded. If I find out what the "CEC" catalogue part number is, I will post it.

Hi "someone claiming to be Hugh",
You should consider supporting Brickboard.
Just cut off the old lamp leads where they are welded to the end of the
pins. Then the old lamp will release and there's holes to thread the
wire leads of the 14V grain of wheat bulb in position. Cut to the right length
and solder with a small iron.
One time I needed to run a wire drill through to open the holes
in a lamp like this.
Maybe a hot hatpin would have done it too. It's not a big deal.
Cheers, Bill

That's the right base and wrong voltage.
You want only 14 volt bulbs in your car.
Here's the right wedge bulb (940/850/etc) for the idiot lights.

Here's the one Hugh wants, you can see it's soldered and not a wedge bulb.

I'm waiting for Hugh to find the CEC part number in that giant catalog.
Cheers, Bill

“… You want only 14 volt bulbs in your car...”
I’m curious as to why so. Do they last longer?

Filament bulbs die faster with increasing voltage.
The system voltage in our cars is about 14 volts from the voltage regulator
to charge the battery. You want lamps designed for 14 volts.
12 volt lamps will work and shine brighter with over voltage, and burn out faster.
Some of these 14 volt lamps have options that draw more current and are
brighter, and others draw less current for longer service life.
Some cars are worse than others to change idiot lights, so long life is a blessing.
Happy motoring, Bill

I hear you - anything to make a bulb last longer. The manufacturers seem to like making them harder and harder to get to. I just spent the better part of an hour replacing the taillight bulb in my son-in-law’s Hyundai. Had to pop out about two dozen of those plastic rivers and drop the truck lid liner.

Yeah, but the shipping rates are a bit much.

Unless I am greatly mistaken that bulb should pull out of the base. Have you tried that?
Volvo may stick that bulb in the base and give it a part number but the bulb itself is, according to the owner's book, a W 2x4.6 d, which is better known as a 2721 and is available at any auto parts store in a blister pack with two bulbs for just a few dollars. Seriously, look it up.

BulletProof,
The bulb does not pull out of the black plastic base. It appears I will destroy the bulb by trying to pull it out. The real challenge will be trying to force the replace bulb back into the plastic socket.
Thank you for responding to my query.

Hi Hugh,
Two options, neither of them Volvo, a specialist in breathtaking markups.
Look at Eiko and/or CEC Industries catalogs for sub miniature 14 volt lamps.
NOT 12 Volt lamps.
They are two of the big manufacturers of auto lamps.
Once you get the CEC part# you can probably find it on Ebay.
Search: "CEC _____(part #)___"
Example:
What's the Volvo price for the idiot lights? How high can they go?
I used CEC E-37 wedge bulbs for 940/850 idiot lights.
They were maybe $8 or $9 shipped, for a box of ten at Ebay,
You pull dead wedge bulb out of the PC socket,
and shove the new wedge bulb into the old socket, done.
You will also see the socket and wedge bulb sold as a unit
if you lose or break the socket.
Option two:
This is what I did here for that funky lamp you want:
Get some 14 volt grain of wheat lamps. (NOT 12 VOLT)
They are available cheap from Ebay. 100/$8.00 +- shipped.
Cut out the dead lamp from the old socket and solder in a new bulb.
It costs about $0.08 and a little solder and a small solder iron.
14 volt Grain of wheat bulbs come in several different physical sizes
and current draw (that equates to lumens output and service life)
See the two manufacturers catalogs for exact,
or buy a bag of generic on Ebay.
You can easily re-illuminate dead Volvo rocker switches with these lamps.
Thread the lamp pigtails through a little plastic holder
and cut the leads. It's obvious as soon as you see it.
Then twist the assembly into the socket.
Probably you have some of them burned out.
Report back with the CEC part # if you have the patience to dig it out of
their catalog.
Cheers, Bill
