Has anyone used a Dorman drive shaft on their XC wagon? V70-XC70 1999

Hello All,

I posted a recent query about having to replace the drive shaft on my 1999 V70 AWD XC wagon. Initially I was going to try to locate (a New Old Stock) Volvo drive shaft, but those efforts have not panned out. Now I am considering purchasing an aftermarket driveshaft manufactured by Dorman. The Volvo part number for the drive shaft is # 9183941. RockAuto.com sell one for $753.79 (tax included).

My question to all is:

Has anyone purchased an installed a Dorman drive shaft for a Volvo XC wagon and what has your experience been to date? Thank you in advance to all who respondd.

Hugh

I have heard that Dorman quality is not all that good? Was the assembly damaged making it unusable or only prop shaft bearings and center support bearing?

I am planning to replace the front prop shaft bearing myself and believe it will not be that difficult? The OE splines are factory marked and I transferred it to the tube.

Curious about timing it to the bevel gear, which I have already marked!

    What an enormous price.
Look here: $237 Meyle, shipped expedited, from EU.

There's a support bearing that shows up with this search.
Get a second opinion that the problem isn't the support bearing.

      Bill,

Thank you for your reply. For the time being I am going to the drive shaft removed and drive the car without it. I have changed my Volvo from AWD to FWD. I have been told by my mechanic it will provide me with better gas mileage and acceleration. I may still one day reinstall the driveshaft, but he told me it was a bad design by Volvo. The driveshaft will basically fail every 100,000 miles (which was my experience). However, thanks to your reply, I won't be facing a near $1,000 expense if I pursue that option.

      Hugh
