hi guys i leave my house every morning same time it takes me like 20 minutes to get to the gas station i would go and grab water and leave car is idling as soon as i get back on the road i see a puff of blue smoke from tailpipe i know there are many possibilities on this 1 help

    Most likely valve seals starting to go bad. Does the smoke go away at higher speeds? Common on high mileage 5 cylinder engines. How many miles on your car? My 95 850 started doing it around 230,000 miles.

      yes the smoke goes away at higher speeds but at idle and revving up the car you can see blue smoke out the tailpipe mileage on my 98 volvo v70 is 241k whats the best way to fix

        Unfortunately, a valve job is the only fix. You will need to replace the valve seals at a minimum. The valves themselves are probably fine.

          i see even if i gave it the glove test to see if the pcv system is clogged that still wouldnt matter

            it sounds like jwalker is right about valve seals.
            just out of curiosity, what kind of oil have you been using?
            has that engine seen dino-oil?

              Some oil brands, and users as well, advocate "High-mileage" synthetic oils that contain additives to condition valve stem seals and lessen oil consumption.

              The reviews are mixed on these high-mileage oils. Any experience out there, one way or another?

                did i see you in a video wearing a steelers hat?

                one thing that seems sure, don't run conventional oil in 5 cyl volvos
                (or any car for that matter). It clogs up egr plumbing causing plenty of trouble.
                also my volvo trained indy reports that conventional oil also has a nasty habit
                of clogging up oil galleries in 5-cylinder heads with that same hard crusty stuff
                you find clogging up the egr port to the intake manifold.
                clogged oil galleries in the cylinder head are a nightmare likely promoting
                excessive valve wear and failed head gaskets.

                i looked up "castro" gtx oil and see its conventional oil
                and there is also castrol (usa div of castro oil, havana) gtx and gtx synthetic.
                maybe there's a gtx synthetic blend? easy to grab the wrong one.
                unless you change your own oil, all bets are off as to what you got.
                i think the last indy that charged the p/o of my car for an oil change was a robber.
                the oil at very low mileage and time was as black as putin's heart.
                there's another good reason to change your own oil.

                the photos of castrol gtx and spec sheets at lowe's are rubbish, where they
                hide the api/--? spec altogether.
                it would be nice to know the breakdown temp for oils and have it printed on
                the container.

                i have some jugs of mobil-1 and castrol edge full synthetic 5-40 api/sn euro blend here
                5w-40 api/sn euro blend is what mobil-1 says for my high mileage redblock 940.
                mobil says 10,000 miles or a year for oil changes.
                i'll be changing my oil sooner since the p/o and volvo shops were running
                conventional oil in this 940. ugh! you can see the synthetic oil cleaning out the engine gunk.

                  Many of us watch Robert DIY S. fix Volvos on YouTube and he often wears a Steelers cap!

                  Just read a Bob is the Oil Guy thread on valve stem seals and high mileage engine oil treatments, and I stopped counting the many opinions.

                  Adding to B.B.'s comments, our 2000 V70 SE (B5244S non-turbo) has 287K miles and has used Mobil 1 10W-30 from its first oil change. Passes the "glove test" and the state smog test, and still has the original PCV system installed.
