Control Arm / Bushing S40-V40

Hello . Volvo S40 2006 . My front passenger side control arm bushing is bad . Rear big bushing behind wheel . It is held on by 2 bolts . End of control arm goes into middle of this bushing . Local car parts places tell me I have to/should replace whole control arm . Is this so ?? Can I not just replace bushing ? Would be less of a job and less expensive . Control arm itself is fine . Any advice is much appreciated .

The link below from FCP Euro shows the control arm bushing. Call or write them them with any questions. I’ve ordered Volvo parts from them for years. Good company…

      Hi Jim,

There's bushings available for some 850 control arms also, but the catch might be
the special tooling to press them out and back in.

        Hey Bill,

Funny that you mentioned using a press. I too was thinking about 850 bushings when I wrote my previous post! Specifically, I remember needing to replace the entire control arm when the ball joints went bad. On 240’s some bushings can be replaced separately. The OP mentioned that he might be able to replace just the bushing and not the entire control arm so I went along with his assumption. Looking at the FCP Euro image, it looks like it might be possible but I am not sure as I have never physically looked at an S40 control arm. Hard to tell if a press is necessary.

How’s your arm? BTW - I did try and send you an email but I guess it didn’t work because my email is not registered on the BB. I did have my email available at an earlier time but I removed it for privacy reasons. Considering subscribing and then adding it again so we can compare war wounds!🤕😉

          Hi Jim,

I wound up replacing control arms in the 850 and was not overwhelmed with any
of the aftermarket arms. One came with a soft steel threaded bolt to lock
the ball joint and it quickly deformed introducing slop. There should probably be a hardened and ground tapered surface where it bears against the ball joint groove to lock it..

I'm still in rehab for the elbow and it gets expanded starting today.
The Triceps surgery is OK but I go for an ultra sound next week to check for a possible massive rotor cuff tear. The doc said 50:50 chance for a shoulder replacement.

          Try the Brickmail again.

          Cheers, Bill
