Keeping it, but new problems arising V70-XC70 1998

Thanks to those who gave input, I am keeping and fixing my '98 V70 w/252K miles. I know problems will keep arising, but it's a great, reliable car, and I love being able to do a lot of the work myself. I also love no car payments and the wealth of information available, especially here on Brickboard.

New issue just arose today. I no longer have fobs, so I lock and unlock the car with the key. Turing once unlocks driver's door, and twice unlocks other doors. There's also a switch inside the door to unlock other doors. as of today, the rear doors do not unlock. I ehar something happening inside the door when I turn the key the second time, as though it's "trying" to unlock. I sprayed with silicone lubricant, but no dice. Any suggestions?

Thank you as always!

I thought I would post an update; this seems to be entirely related to the temperature. If it's a hot day, the locks don't work. Otherwise they do. Weird.

Here's the best explanation for hot-weather door lock issues from Robert DIY:

I didn't try to repair the locks as outlined in this video; I replaced all four door locks, as all were showing intermittent failure as the outside temperature increased. (On my 2000 V70 SE).

However, it was good to understand the reasons for V70/S70 door lock failure with rising ambient temperatures.

Have you checked all the fuses? I’m not sure if your model/year has a Rear Electronics Module (REM) with an associated fuse panel or if the rear accessories are fed by a fuse panel further forward in the car. But your rear door locking issues sound a lot like the problems I was having when my tailgate wiring got pinched/severed/shorted up inside the LH tailgate hinge. This led to blown fuses and rear doors that wouldn’t lock, along with other failures including the gas door wouldn’t open in the gas station until I popped a new fuse in.

Have you lost the fobs or are they "broken". I have a 2000 V70 (P1 type) my fob was dodgy and found that one of the connections on the PCB switch, lock button, had come adrift. A dab of solder fixed it. Check the 4 connections on each of the 2 switches. Use a fresh battery.

Before taking the doors apart, I would fiddle with the individual door locks in the rear doors and the child locks in the rear doors - just an out of the box thing to try,

Probably may not do anything, but something easy to try.

Doh! - Until we got our used '88 745 GLE, in 30 years or so I never even had any of those features.

Spraying the lock will do no good. Did the passenger front door unlock when you turned the key the second time? How about the rear hatch?

Try pressing the lock/unlock switch on the inside of the door and see what happens.

If nothing happens when you use the switch in the car, it may be a loose wire.

The tailgate has lock has never opened aside from actually using the key in the tailgate. The interior switch on the door has the same results as with the key: the front passenger door unlocks, but neither rear door does (though there is a sound of something trying to work). In other words, the motors seem to be working--I can hear them--but they do not unlock the doors.

Seems to me to be a strange coincidence that both rear locks aren't working. Did they stop working at the same time? If so, then that would potentially point to not the individual door mechanisms but something that is common to both. Of course it would be helpful if I could suggest what that might be but I can't! Just trying to use the information provided to diagnose as much as possible..

These posts below also seems similar but no resolution here also but may be something else to try. Relays, fuses, power reset/reboot
