thermostat shell gasket V70-XC70 2006

I inadvertently dismantled the thermostat, thinking that I would have to remove it to get the intake manifold out. I went to a local supplier and was advised I would have to replace the entire unit, which comprises a thermostat, a gasket, an electrical connector, and the two housing shells, at a cost of $381.40CAN.

The gasket is made of metal and has to deal with the heat of the engine and the pressure of the coolant.

It is not the gasket that lives between the thermostat and the engine head. I have one of those in the head gasket kit.

This gasket lives between the two sides of the housing.

I will try to supply a picture.

Could I make do with gasket goo or a paper gasket or is there a supplier who would sell the gasket on its own.

Has anybody else ran into this situation and if so what did they do?

Actually, that gasket doesn't look that bad. You might be able to sparingly use high temp gasket goo (for a better word) on both sides of the gasket and reuse it. If it fails after engine rebuild, watch closely first few times after engine warms up and you turn it off, you can then chalk it up to a mistake and buy the whole unit.

Don't let this slow you down. ;)

      Hi Klaus,

I am trying my local Volvo dealer first to see if I can buy that gasket independent of the thermostat unit. Almost everybody confuses this gasket with the thermostat-to-head gasket. That tells me that most peopel change out the entire unit.

I expect I will be shopping for some high temperature gasket cement soon.

      Thanks again for your input.

      Bob

If anyone reading this thread has access to the Volvo Vida software they can look up the part number of this gasket. It has a distinct shape so should be easy to identify.

This doesn't look very encouraging but it appears to be the gasket you need.

Also scroll down through here. Looks like it is used on the S60 as well.

thank you. that is the gasket. V70-XC70 2006

          Morning Derek,

Your KUN7C reference shows the gasket that lives between the split shells of the thermostat housing. This is the first time I have seen it shown anywhere other than on my own car.

I started reading your other matthews volvosite information and from what I can glean so far it is not unusual for Volvo mechanics to dismantle the shell rather than to remove the entire unit and replace it. It was much easier for me to do this I might say. The lower mounting screw [torx in my case]for the entire unit cannot be seen except with a mirror and one has to ask why all of this should be changed out because of a failing thermostat.

It looks like I will have to clean up the gasket and replace it with some high temperature gasket cement slathered on it. This was the advice from Klaus and he is a very reliable source of information. My local dealer informed me that Volvo only sells the entire unit and not just the thermostat.

I did find a Chinese version available at ipd for a little over a hundred Canadian and I am considering this option as well because ipd does not sell junk and it might be a good idea to change the thermostat at this point in the life of the car.

          Most valuable input. Thank you.

          Bob

You might also try www.fcpeuro.com for the part. Have bought a lot of Volvo parts from them over the years. Cheaper than IPD.

But… I like Klaus’s gasket idea better! Worth a shot. If it doesn’t work you can always do the whole thing.

Correct Derek. Volvo decided to embed the thermostat in a sealed housing and make money on parts. The metal gasket does not exist for resale. Or was that FORD??

            Morning Klaus,

I am considering the Chinese version available through ipd at a little over a hundred Canadian shipped. I know ipd would check it out before selling it.

But I also like your option of cleaning the gasket and sealing with high temp gasket cement.

            Bob

p.s. you did advise it would cost to move it and you are right.

Not all thermostats are created equal. Most of the knock offfs fail to open rather than fail to close. I would rather drive a cold car than a car that overheats rapidly.

Clean the current gasket, put a thin layer of rtv on both sides and press it back together. That should buy you a lot of time. You have other things to worry about.

Your supplier clicked the wrong drop-down menu link. It's a "Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Gasket", Volvo PN 8636573, and is available from multiple aftermarket suppliers too.

Looks like the original was pretty well used up - now is a good time to renew it.

    Best of luck,

      Will,

Your reference led me to a picture of the gasket used between the thermostat housing and the engine head. The gasket I am seeking is not that one.

I have emailed a local Volvo dealer to see if they can provide it.

I don't believe that is a steel embossed gasket so there are many forms of paper gaskets available something less than exhaust gaskets. Measure the thickness to allow for compressibility. I actually used some material from NAPA for a turbo oil drain gasket, which is hotter than coolant.

I still have contacts from service engineering if you need more current advice?

I am trying the local Volvo dealer first to see if I can get the gasket. My impression is that most people buy the entire unit when changing out a thermostat and that is why I am ha. ving so much trouble finding this particular gasket. I might end up going there and will seek out a less expensive unit. I will check ipd first.

Klaus advises using a high temperature gasket cement applied to the original gasket. Might go there as well.

      Regardless, thanks for your input.

      Bob

I can't give you a part number but you should be able to get this gasket from a main dealer for a not too unreasonable price. Take the old one with you so they can check the shape against the illustration on the microfiche.

      Hello Derek,

I have sent the picture to a local dealer and am waiting for a reply. I suspect one is supposed to buy the entire unit so I might try coating the gasket with high temperature gasket cement and going with that.
