Do I have a gas gauge problem? V70-XC70

I typically see every car I owned will hold at the full mark for what I consider quite a few miles.

My 2007 XC 70 is off the full mark rather quickly, less than 10-12 mi. Currently sitting down to 1/4 mark at 45 miles driven.

I have driven enough to light the warning light but my wife prefers to fill up at
well above empty!

My search revealed nothing like this. No doubt I need another Spring project?

Words are cheap, use more of them.

So, you took the sending unit out of the tank, hopefully unplugging the fuel pump, put the key in posII, and moved the lever, by hand, to what should be the 'full' mark. The dash gauge says 3/4??

Sounds like something is bent at the stop position, or real dirty. My neighbor used to pour his left over gas/oil mix for his 2 cycle engines in the car's gas tank at the end of the season. The oil coated the sending unit and ruined it.

The sending unit has a rheostat in it. If that breaks or is damaged, it needs to be replaced.

Klaus it was brand new unit from FCP. tank was clean and dry. After 115 miles it still reads slightly above 1/2 tank. It was accurate enough to light low fuel light.

I could check electrical connections or possibly dash gauge.? I also can live with knowing that Low fuel light is accurate!

I do miss the green book for wiring (That I relied on for my 745)

By the way Klaus, I have followed your advice on oil, seals, IPD vacuum hoses, PTC and IC cooler parts, MPG suggestions, adding tire inflation by 4 psi and more! The result is an XC70 that I am loving and is fun to drive.

I thank you others who have helped me in returning to BB!

I was suspicious that there just might two units that combine for an accurate gauge reading! I did find that "Tech" in formed a poster that one of two units can fail! Most likely the left one!

Best for me to buy a new pump failing on the road to Charlotte would elicit a deluge of inappropriate comments from Wife!

Do I have a gas gauge problem? V70-XC70

I read this thread three times and I still can't follow it.

The last time someone posted a gas gauge problem they realized that they ran over a rock outcropping when leaving a grass parking lot at a Four H fair and dented their tank.

Was the gauge problem related to a dented tank and now is better?

i thought denting the tank may have caused the problem! As it turned out I found no physical damage so it is likely that a new unit should/would correct the incorrect reading. See Klaus post explanation.

Well, it's Spring and I pulled the LH sending unit with the Low fuel light illuminated ad did observe nothing bent or damaged as well as no fuel in the plastic tank. Can't really say the float was overly saturated?

Added 6 gallons and now reads slightly under 1/2 tank! It might be psychological to replace the unit but there are other problems like vacuum leaks that need corrected.

I did find evidence of leaks at a distorted PTC grommet and turbo outlet PSI hose.

You bent the tank and then dropped the car? Are you pouring out gasoline when the engine is running?

Aahh, you have a plastic tank and it looks OK now? The level sender is on the driver's side, but if you bent it, It should always be higher or lower than actual. A Normal gauge should read full for 50-60 miles after a fill up.

You may have pushed the sensor arm past 'full' and now have a low reading when almost full.

Be careful when ordering sensors, they changed in late 2007 and you will need the last digits of the VIN to get a proper one.

Thank Goodness for that response! The tank did pop back out on a warm day and I hoped it was, Okay? No leaks at this time!

FCP will have to be contacted with a VIN.

'You may have pushed the sensor arm past 'full' and now have a low reading when almost full."

Makes sense! "A Normal gauge should read full for 50-60 miles after a fill up."

Sounds like it could be a sender or sender float issue. On some cars the float can be replaced separately. Don’t know for sure. Keep researching before replacing the whole Sending Unit.

Thanks jwalker I will check it out as I partially deformed the gas tank when I missed the "jacking area"!

      Tank was only deformed temporarily!

Manual indicates sender could be replaced, thought dropping fast might be a normal function?
