Low Beam Headlights Not Working C70

My low beam headlights suddenly stopped working. High beams only work if I hold the lever forward and force them on. My fog/driving lights below the bumper do not work. All other indicator lights work. The driver bulb appears burned and may be bad or near failure the passenger bulb looks normal. No "bulb failure" warning lights on the dash. The yellow wire plastic/casing leading to the driver's side low beam socket appears to be disintegrating exposing clean copper wire but there is no evident of arcing. The dashboard switch seems to work at least for turning on and off the indicator lights.

I will replace the bulbs but suspect this is not the root cause. Is there a relay or control module that likely needs replaced somewhere? And, is the section of wiring that connects to the base of the bulb replaceable?

Thanks once again for your help.

Steve

Just to close the loop. The problem was the headlight switch. The plastic module had cracked and come apart. I replaced the switch and the interior dimmer switch next to it which had become lose from broken retaining clips and the lights work perfectly. Probably a result of the AZ heat. In the process I had noticed the headlight wiring harness had decayed with much of the wire coating cracked and missing. The wiring harness on the 2003-2004 C70 is not replaceable. So, Swedish Auto Werks in Phoenix rewired the assemblies for me and as a result they work perfectly. Thank you! One interesting challenge I encountered. I had opened one of the headlight assemblies to see if I could access the wiring. In the process I used "Invisible Glass" glass cleaner, which I use on all my cars tinted windows, and must have used too much or left on the lens too long. The product clouded and damaged the inner surface of the lens substantially. After extensive polishing with rubbing compound I was successful at returning the luster of the lens. All is well!

"...is the section of wiring that connects to the base of the bulb replaceable?"

After checking bulbs and fuses (look on the underside of fuse box lid for headlamp fuse numbers), the H7 bulb socket and bare / exposed wiring would be suspect.

ipdusa offers a H7 bulb socket with pigtail that can be spliced into the harness wiring where the insulation deterioration stops. ipd part number 120485.

If a more thorough repair is necessary, an entire new headlamp wiring harness may be required. Volvo part number 9438738.

Fuses will blow if bare wire on headlamp leads is making contact.

Address these items first, before suspecting relays or switches.

After further exploration the issue is not related to the headlamp wiring, bulbs or fuses. Recommendations on next most likely cause of no low beams? My high beams only come on when the lever is pulled forward but don't stay on. The fog lamps do not work either. Everything else seems to work fine. All side markers, turn signals etc.

Fog lamps are only allowed to work with the low beams?

Did you look at replacing the headlamp switch? Or moving the switch ever so slightly from the on position?

        Do parking lights work?

Keeping it running is better than buying new

This is somewhat of a long shot but worth considering. Your description matches exactly what happened to my old 90 240 years ago. The high/low beam switch that is incorporated into the high/low beam lever on the steering column went bad on that car. I was lucky. I was able to remove the steering column covers and thoroughly cleaned the switch and wiring with electrical cleaner. Voila! High/low beam function restored! Bear in mind that the solution may not be so easy in your car. It might require a new high/low beam lever or some other part.

If it helps, here are some photos showing what I went through to clean out the innards of both of our P2 cars (05 S80 and 03 V70) a few years back. The dielectric grease they use in the internal contacts eventually dries out and gets hard, inhibiting good contact.

Thank you! This car (2004) has the H11 bulb and socket for the low beam. I did find the H7 available from IPD but couldn't find a part for the H!!. Thanks very much for the wiring harness part number. Do you by chance have the wiring harness part number for the H11 version?? Thanks very much.

H11 is a halogen bulb - I guess it's an option for your C70's low beam?

H11 has different connectors and case mounting plug than a H7. Here's how it's listed at ipd:

Headlamp Socket Electrical Connector for H11 Headlamp Bulb - Flosser - 9448 - 31299732 (Volvo part number) - 120484 (ipd part number).

There are probably parts other sources too.

Yes, the bulb is a halogen. The connector is different. I actually bought a pair of H7 bulbs as this is what is listed in the owner's manual. But no dice. The bulb base and socket is completely different. The one I took out is imprinted with H11. Thanks very much! I have ordered many, many times from IPD and appreciate the products and how to videos.
