1998 V70 dual master cylinder brake circuit arrangement ? V70-XC70 1998

Does anyone have a brake piping diagram for the 1998 V70 or 96-97 850's ? The dual master cylinder ABS system must not be dual-diagonal because there is only 1 brake line serving both rear wheels.

Perhaps the system is configured as front calipers on one master cylinder section and rear calipers on the other section ? Does that mean that ABS modulates the front calipers individually and the rear calipers as a pair for a total of 3 ABS circuits ? This is different than the 2001-2006 V70s that have the dual master cylinder configured as dual-diagonal and 4 ABS circuits.

I am asking because the rear brakes are not applying much force on one of my 1998 V70s. Rust spots on the rear rotors are not scrubbed off after a day of city driving. On my other 98 V70, all 4 rotors are equally bright and shiny.

Thanks,

Mike

    ANSWER 1998 V70 dual master cylinder brake circuit arrangement ? V70-XC70 1998

    I confirmed that 1998 V70 has 3 ABS circuits:
1 circuit for left front caliper
1 circuit for right front caliper
1 circuit for both rear calipers

The master cylinder primary section serves the front calipers and the secondary section serves the rear calipers. Fluid loss in either front brake circuit would leave only the rear brakes functioning.

Starting in 1999, V70s have 4 ABS brake circuits with the master cylinder sections connected in dual diagonal configuration. A fluid loss in one brake circuit would leave the other brake circuit (one front caliper and one rear caliper) still functioning.

Initially I thought the lack of brake force on my rear calipers was not related to the calipers because it seemed unlikely that both calipers would seize at the same time. Connecting a brake line pressure gauge in place of the left rear caliper bleeder indicated that max brake line pressure was OK - in the 1000 to 1500 psi range with the ABS fuses removed.

A closer look at the rear calipers showed that the outboard pad on both calipers was rusted solid to the caliper body.

After replacing both calipers with rebuilt units made by Centric, the rear brakes are now working fine.

Don’t have a diagram but you could also try google and Matthews Volvo Website.

I recall reading about an ABS valve closing preventing fluid from reaching the calipers. Check for fluid at the caliper bleeder valve. You could also remove a brake line and check there for fluid.

    Couple of other thoughts:
    1. Have you bleed the system recently? May just be air in the rear.
    2. Are your rear calipers themselves okay? The problem is probably upstream as it is doubtful both could be going at the same time.
