A check gas cap message popped up a couple weeks ago, followed by CEL code P0455, "Evaporative System Malfunction, Gross Leak". I was the last person to fill the tank, did not "top off" the tank.

Code cleared multiple times, gas cap swapped with a new Honda cap on the shelf - no change.

Thought on where to go from here?

Patient is a 2015.5 XC60 T6 (3.0 turbo six), 112k miles.

The leak detection pump didn't fix it.

Two trips to the indie shop and three hours labor later, they found and fixed a worn through hose, apparently touching the driveshaft??

I was a little annoyed that to start their diagnosis was no better than mine, but ultimately pleased that they found and fixed the problem without resorting to my method of "spray and pray" with replacement parts.

Generic codes don't always work. You could have a failure in the diagnostic vacuum pump.

If the pump is good, a smoke test will find the leak.

Thanks Klaus. This sounds like territory requiring VIDA to run a diagnostic test? If that's the case and a smoke producing apparatus is required I will have already crossed that threshold where the life partner will veto any more fiddling on my part and it will go to the local indie shop.

Otherwise, how does one test the pump, check for a hum or suction while the engine is running? Trailer hitch should be arriving soon so I'll already have a reason to be back there and lowering the exhaust.

When will I learn…

I was able to buy a new purge solenoid, gas cap, and leak detection (evap) pump for less than the cost of an hours labor at my local Volvo specialist, plus I already planned to be under the rear end to install a trailer hitch receiver, so why not tackle it myself?

With the solenoid and gas cap (<5 minute job) the code stayed away for a few days, but returned.

I’m now elbow deep under this thing realizing that they built the whole rear of the car around this LDP. Surrounded by subframe top and bottom with the differential and driveshafts thrown in for good measure. Hoses take convoluted turns to reach their destinations (which I have free). Subframe loosened and dropped about 1/2inch but that doesn’t help much.

Would be much easier if the hoses weren’t that this plastic that seems to be stretched over the barbs of the pump (no clamps). They turn on the pump, but aren’t about to slide off, especially where the whole thing is wedged. Do I need to apply a heat gun to get the plastic hose to move? I’m afraid if I cut it off I’ll never get it back on.

Swung by the local Hazard Fraught tools and picked up a heat gun. That was the only way those hoses were gonna come off (short of a knife). Worked a trick on the first tube allowing me to remove the pump and other hose. Needed more heat to reinstall.

Fingers crossed that’s the fix…

Side note, the instructions that come with aftermarket trailer hitches are laughable. Fish wires were never going to work. Luckily removing the bumper cover and the steel beneath is straightforward, allowing access to the backsides of the mounting holes in the unibody.
