What type of glue should I use to re-attach the '850' emblem back on the rear door of my 850 Wagon? 850 1996

Hello All,

I was washing my 1996 850 GLT wagon, when the plastic emblem "850" which is on the rear door toward the right lower hand side of the panel, just under the plastic emblem "Volvo" spontaneously fell off. This plastic emblem was glued onto the door panel at the factory. Can anyone recommend a glue that I can use that will securely reattach this emblem to the paint finish of the rear door? I was very "lucky" this plastic emblem popped off into my hands as I was washing the car. If could have just as easily popped off as I drove down the highway.

I can't expect I will always be so lucky. I thought to myself, "If I lost this emblem, where in the world would I get another?" I don't ever want to have to answer that question, by properly securing this emblem back in place. I do have a glue called "Gorilla Glue" which is a clear adhesive that I have used successfully on other items. However, I would happily welcome any recommendations. Thanks in advance to all who reply.

Hugh

Hi,

There is a product made by 3M that is like two sided tape but it’s called “emblem” tape in the auto parts stores.
They sell the very same stuff it in hardware stores, under different holding strengths, for less money per square inch.

The major difference is in the packaging having narrow widths pre cut on a roll X inches long!
You still have to use scissors either way.
So, I figured I can cut lengthways, let alone off the end of a set width and vary my applications.

The hardware store issue comes wider and that doubles the amount we get for the money!
This experience sneaks up on you to become a crafty and frugal fixer of things!

On the 240’s they have very long plastic trim along the bottoms of doors and such!
Volvo used the same technique but after so many years the heat and cold weakens anything but 3M
adhesives are better made and the products are showing up on lots of things. Even on rain gutter screens!

So with that said, there is your answer!
Even if, longer that you expected!

Phil

Machine Man,

Thank you for your detailed answer. When I examined the "GLT" emblem that fell off, it looked like it had been glued on. However, this rear door was repaired when I was struck from behind by an auto body shop that I stopped going back to because I found its repairs to be shoddy. Maybe this shop should have used the "emblem tape" you described above, but instead took the short cut of just gluing it back on. I put a call into a local auto body shop supply store and it carries emblem tape. I know you explained the price difference between what auto body shop supply stores charge and what your local hardware store charges, but I'll buy the emblem tape from the auto body supply store. I've spent money more foolishly than that in the past.

Before I apply the emblem tape, I will have to clean the paint surface of the
dried out glue that remained when the emblem separated. Wish me luck. Again, thank you for your reply.

Hugh

Hugh,

Use alcohol to wash off the glue on the emblem and the car body. The tape will not stick well to dirty paint. Use masking tape or painter's tape to get a level line so the emblem is level.

Klaus,

That is excellent advice on both accounts. I plan on picking up some emblem tape from a local auto body supply store on Saturday, and make the repair over he weekend. The idea of using painter's masking tape is a great idea. I only want to put this emblem back once!

Hello All,

I gave a bad description. The "GLT" emblem was located on the lower right portion of the rear door, but under the emblem "850". Not a huge difference, but I wanted to avoid confusion in my description. Thanks.
