Hood release bypass/work-around? V70-XC70 2007

I posted a couple days ago about this, and now I am trying a different question/solution. The hood release cable (and handle) have broken off inside the car. It looks like more of a job than I can do myself to replace it, and the amount of time it will take for a mechanic makes the job too expensive. Is there any way to rout or cut the cable that goes to the interior so I can release from outside the car? For example, could I perhaps run the cable through the front grille, or below the front bumper, and access it that way? Alternatively, could I adjust so that I don't need the initial release at all, and simply release the hood from the front hood latch (the secondary release)?
Thanks!

No, you cannot rely on the safety catch to keep the hood closed!

I would not remove the cable leading into the cabin, that buys you nothing but future headaches.

If you search the WWW you will find a few interesting methods for opening the hood from the front of the car, most involve wiring both latches separately and having the wire extend down for an easy, but not obvious reach.

Keeping it running is better than buying new
