What is the life span of the Tire Pressure Monitor System monitor in the tire? XC90 2016

Hello All,

I own a 2016 XC90 T8 Inscription Hybrid Plug-In. I have had confirmed by my local Volvo dealer this car has "direct" TPMS, that is the tire pressure sensor is built into the valve stem and is powered by a sealed battery. When the batter fails, you don't replace the battery, you replace the whole valve stem assembly. These valve stems cost $113 each and their part number is # 31362304. I asked the clerk at the dealer's parts department what the lifespan was for the TPMS sensors on the 2016 XC90? He said none of them in his experience had failed to date.

So I pose the same question to fellow 2016 XC90 owners: Have any of you had to replace the TPMS sensors yet? I was advised by the clerk that Volvo changed to an "indirect" TPMS the next model where where a sensor in the ABS system monitors the tire pressure instead of the sensor in the valve stem.

Thank you in advance to all who reply. Incidentally, and I say this with crossed fingers, none of the TPMS sensors have failed on my XC90 yet, though it is now over 4 years old and has 65,000 miles on the odometer. Hope springs eternal.

Hugh

As for the recondition of a TPS, Volvo sells a kit.

When I got new tires for our 2008 XCF70, the sensors were tired - My tire shop had replacements for much less than Volvo's ones.

Actually they are nicer than Volvo;s - the stem is rubber with a brass tip, they look just like regular tubeless tire valve stems - they work fine. I have since e rebuilt the old Volvo sensors and have then for spares.

BTW - My 2008 had a slow leak and the sensor alarm went off - We used our other car that day, and the next day MY KEY FOB WOULD NOT UNLOCK THE CAR! My dealer had never heard of that happening, but it happened to me three times.

My son-in-law, a Suaru tech told me that it made some sense because the door lock and the tire sensors use the same computer - they both are wireless.

      James,

I hope I don't have the same experience with my TPMS sensors, but if I do, I'll have an explanation. I hope my personal experience with the TPMS sensors remains hypothetical, and as long as I own the car, they never fail. Hope springs eternal!

    Hugh,
The TPMS you have has a transponder inside which sends the computer the actual tire pressure. The transponder takes very little electricity to work, and it should work for at least 30 years, if not longer.

The 'new' TPMS system tracks tire rotation. A deflated tire will turn faster than the others and the ABS will turn on the warning light when it detects an anomaly. The ABS will not know which wheel is low, that is up to the driver to determine. It is a much cheaper system.

There are TPMS systems on the after market which will tell you what each tire pressure is and also the temperature of the tire. Cost is under $200, labor to install is additional.

      Klaus,

Thank you for your response. With my "fingers crossed" I am not having any issues with the TPMS sensor, but I wanted to educate myself in advance should one fail. Your comment that the battery which powers the sensor should last 30 years, warms my heart. I would cheer if I never have to replace the sensors during the lifetime of my ownership of this Volvo. Thank you for explaining the difference in the two types of TPMS systems. I like my "old" design better than the "new" one. I wish I could boast I choose it that way, but it is how the car came.

      Stay safe and well.

      Hugh

Hugh, My wife drives a 2014 (85K miles) with the TPMS and it has correctly activate a few times over the years. Never replaced had to service it in any way. Recently The tires were replaced and I noted on the bill " TPMS valve reconditioned $5.95.......I don't have any idea what that was for, but not
    worth following up on.

I would talk with a major tire store and they most likely know the
    answer to your question.

Volvo sells an inexpensive kit to rebuild the sensors if they are serviceable.

If I remember correctly, it has a nut, a seal, and perhaps a washer or two.

      Art,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I will follow your advice. I have a relationship with two national chain tire stores that are located nearby. I will run the question by them.

      Hugh
