My rotors and pads after 40K Miles V70-XC70 2005

Hi folks,

I would like to have your opinion on those rotors/pads, 3 yeard old, 40k miles on them.

- Brembo rotors
- Akebono pads

One of the most important suppliers in the US cannot explain to me why the front rotors ended up the way you see, considering that the pads are not worn out.

For your convenience, I have uploaded a .zip folder so that you can see the full set of pictures I took today.

Any insights?
I live in Canada, so yes, winters are harsh, but man... this is on both sides and the right rotor has one layer of metal that came out :(

Any thoughts on what might have generated this problem?

Thank you!
Alex

I used to like Brembo too until they warped prematurely on my 240. Wouldn’t buy them again. They are now made in China...

Volvo branded rotors are also made in China. Seems that China has a lock on steel parts. Or are they outsourced to Bangladesh?

China does seem to own the steel parts market. Would not be surprised if they are outsourced to Bangaladesh...:)

Zimmerman rotors are still made in Germany - AFAIK.

Let's assume that the calipers are in good condition.

Pull the slide pins and examine them for dirt/wear. Clean them until they shine, cover them with silicone brake grease before putting them back.

The pads show uneven wear which could be dirty slide pins or rusty hangers. Clean the points where the pad hangers touch the caliper bracket and grease them. The pad hangers need to slide easily from side to side.

It is 'normal' for the outside edge of the rotor to develop a rusty lip where the pads do not touch, about 1/8 - 1/4 inch wide. I use this for a wear guide.

40,000 could be a lot if it is city driving. Most of my miles are highway and 80K for pads is normal.

      Hi Klaus,

      Thank you for your comments.
I did it already, more than dirt it was rust.

Let's cross fingers, never seen rotors in such bad shape after three years.

      Alex

Minnesota uses too much salt! Even on days when the temp is too cold for the salt to work. Most of my rotors have a rusty lip (4 cars), but I have never seen the lip fall off. Of course, if you change pads and not rotors, which for me is every other time, the new pads will touch the lip and wear a lot on the edge. It looks like that the new pads somehow covered the lip and wore off the rusty area.

Poor condition guide pins will do that.

I like Brembo and Akebono combination. I plan on that with my daughter's Subaru next month. Perhaps I should just order new guide pins just for fun?
