Instrument light dimmer switch doesn't work in the daylight S60

2016 V60 AWD

Does this make sense?

I've never used the instrument panel dimmer knob and today I gave it a try. It wouldn't dim.

Went to the dealer and they said it is a safety feature and it will not dim in the daylight. They don't want to lights to not be visible in the day.

But at night it will dim until the entire instrument cluster is dark.

Does that make sense? At night you can dim it to nothing but in the day you can't even dim it a little bit.

On the bright side, I rather like how all those screens suddenly dim right about that time in the evening that I'd want them dimmed. Like the auto-sensing windshield wipers, one less thing I have to think about while I drive. Beats driving like a pleb in my Honda, reaching through the steering wheel to brighten the cluster during a particularly sunny day, then dimming again when it gets dark. And don't get me started about having to turn the headlights on and off every time I get in the car...

My point is that while yes, sometimes these newfangled cars do too much thinking for us and it can be annoying to not be in control - especially when they do things we don't want them to - sometimes it's best to appreciate the functionality and just sit back and enjoy the drive.

Why is it so complicated? LED instrument clusters that require back lighting to be seen in the daylight and probably too bright when it is cloudy.

As for automatic wipers... When they are used on a 'misty' day and you forget to turn them off when entering the garage, so that when you back out the rear wiper scrapes the dust on the rear window. Or it is below freezing out and ice forms over the sensor location and the dumb wipers scrape the heck out of the wiper blades when the rest of the window is clear.

The forward proximity sensors cannot handle ice/snow collecting on the bumpers, giving me a beeeeep when I slow down. The automatic distance control cannot handle ice/snow/rain - I know, I shouldn't use cruise control in inclement weather, but when driving from icy roads to clear pavement I really don't want to pull over to wipe the sensors off by hand.

Don't get me wrong, I love keyless! But after 10-15 years of no use, will the door locks still work with the key? And where am I supposed to put the bulky remote when wearing swim trunks? Not in any wet pocket!

Obviously, I also don't have a 'smart' phone and no desire to get one. If I'm not home, leave a message!!

Yes but that brightness on a cloudy day and accompanying a migraine headache isn't fun either. Leave it up to me, the owner, the driver. Dim it a bit in the day and still have it would still auto dim.

Volvo isn't the only one. I rented a Chrysler Pacifica and it had the same 'logic'. Gone are the days when the driver could control everything, anytime. Makes me wonder if I should buy a new car or get a nice looking 1960's version of anything and make it reliable for road trips.

    Hmmmm.

I still don't understand the "safety" speech. When I can dim the thing to total darkness doesn't seem to be a safe thing. But it is probably what corporate has told the employees to say

We have a 2018 S60 that does the same sort of thing but only at dusk (half day / half night). During that period of time it’s stuck on full bright. It’s funny to hear how another dealer blows it off as a “safety” feature. Give me a break!! My dealer says to move the headlight switch out of the auto position. I’ve tried that - no luck. It must be a quirk with an ambient light sensor or something like that and they don’t want to admit a fault.

I also have an issue with the rear rotors getting eaten away. Dealer blows that one off also and just says “Don’t worry, you’re still under warranty. We’ll keep an eye on it.”

These cars have definitely gotten chintzy in recent years. Good for you, Volvo. You’ve succeeded in joining the rest of the industry in building throw-away cars.

Many manufacturers have changed the operation of brakes so that the rears activate before the fronts, especially during light braking - this is to cause even wear.

This has caused problems for people who do not keep up on periodic service - the old conventional wisdom that two sets of front pads will get worn out before rear pads no longer applies,

Also, in some of todays cars, the rotors wear out as soon as the pads.

BTW - this is how F1 cars work - in fact, the rotors wear out BEFORE the pads - this is because of the rotors being able to shed more heat than the pads and also heat more consistently.
