spark knock V70-XC70 1998

hi i drive 1998 volvo v70 non turbo and ive been having spark knock issues i had a fuel injection cleaning i use 91 octane did a full tune up and still hear a metallic rattling sound every so often my next move to see if im off time with the timing belt what else should i look for

    Interesting, as the engine has 2 knock sensors which retard timing long before you can hear a knock. What kind of spark plugs do you use? Copper core are best at .028 gap.

    Depending on your driving habits, the cylinder heads may be carboned up. A Seafoam treatment might be in store if the cylinders are very dirty.

    Due to the design of the engine, timing being off is very rare. A one tooth differential will not have any effect.

      i use genuine volvo plugs in my 1998 volvo v70 and i will try using seafoam treament in the gas if that doesnt work i better start leaning towards a vaccum leak but then again anything can make the car ping

      Thanks for confirming what I thought, but did not mention, regarding the timing! I seem to remember that the 5 cylinder engines rarely if ever are off on their timing but wasn’t 100% sure.

    How many miles? High mileage engines often require more octane to prevent pinging or even worse knocking. Did you have the fuel injectors professionally cleaned or simply add some fuel injector cleaner to your fuel system? If it were my car the first thing I would try is adding a bottle of Chevron Techron complete fuel system cleaner to a tank of 93 octane premium. If that doesn’t work you could try an octane booster.

      hi my 1998 volvo v70 has 207k the fuel injection cleaning was done by volvo dealer and they cleaned up some carbon as well and i use 91 octane gas will try chevron techron and use 93 octane and see what happen if not maybe i better start leaning towards a vacuum leak
