Scratched lens

I didn't get any responses on RWD so I will ask here.

What is a good scratch repair product to restore a clear plastic turn signal lens? It is a single long scratch, not too deep.

I do not know about a deep scratch, but I have eliminated fine hairline cracks in old turn signal lenses by painting them with a generous brushing of liquid hobby cement.

Testor's liquid plastic cement is quite similar to acetone and welds plastic (styrene) by melting it - you can wick it into cracks with a paint brush.

when applied to small cracks, it heals and smoothes out the plastic - do not try to brush it several times as the brush marks will show - just give the cracks a single wet coat.

If your scratch is too deep to sand off, perhaps this process can soften the edges of the scratch so that it does not show as much.

Hiya Don,

I think for a scratch you might simply wet sand by hand and follow with polish. If that doesn't do the trick you might step up to one of those plastic headlight repair kits. I'm happy with the results I got using the kit from Harbor Freight on the badly yellowed headlights of my Honda. I believe it was 600 grit followed by 1000 then 3000 grit wet sanding discs. I will say, the disc/drill was a little tough to work evenly on the complex curved surfaces. Whatever you do, use lots of water while wet sanding.

Have a weekend,

Will
