KEYLESS REMOTE ENTRY SYSTEM 850 1997

1997 850 GLT.
When I purchased this (used)'97 GLT, it came without a remote entry key-fob.
Is it true that since this car has central door locking & alarm system (red LED on dash), that all I need to get is a new key-fob to gain this feature on my GLT.?
I know that I will need to program it to the current receiver.
Thanks
Peter

Volvos are great cars - 5-740s, 3-850s, 2-XC70s, 1-544, 1-1800S and more to go. More than 600K Volvo miles!

However repairs are dear - resist buying toys, save your ,money to keep your Volvo in good shape.

Before you get one of two different remotes (only one will work) try this:

Get in the car, close the door, turn the key to position II 5 times and leave it in the on position. The dash LED will blink rapidly signifying a new key can be programmed. If no blinking, then the transceiver will not work with a remote.

Consider yourself lucky. I don't bother with a remote. It is too bulky. You need a key anyway to start the engine. The door lock will not corrode because a key is constantly being used. You don't have to worry about a low battery. After aging, the key needs to be closer and closer to the transceiver.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

Thanks for that reply.
I've never had a car with a remote entry, so I thought it would be a fun bit of farkle if I find a remote for cheap.
There have been a few time where it would have come in handy when loading/unloading.

I'll try the programing test first.
Thanks
